The SBI Probationary Officer advertisement for 2026 (CRPD/PO/2026-27/09, dated 18 June 2026) states a starting basic pay of ₹48,480 plus four advance increments, on the JMGS-I scale of ₹48,480-2000/7-62,480-2340/2-67,160-2680/7-85,920. The advertisement also gives an approximate cost-to-company (CTC) of about ₹21.97 lakh at Mumbai. Treat that CTC as the bank's estimate for one city, not as a promise of take-home pay.

What the CTC includes and what it does not

CTC counts what the bank spends on an officer, so it is larger than the money credited to you. Basic pay is the largest component. The rest is allowances and benefits under the bank's rules, such as dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other allowances, whose rates change over time and with the city of posting. Deductions such as income tax and the retirement-scheme contribution then come off. Use the CTC for comparison between jobs, and ask for the salary structure when you receive the appointment terms.

Growth and promotion

Probationers who complete probation are confirmed as officers in JMGS-I. Promotion then follows SBI's scales, from JMGS-I to Middle Management Grade Scales II and III and onwards, through the bank's promotion process. Pay rises with each annual increment and with each promotion to a higher scale.

How to get the post

SBI PO selection in the 2026 advertisement runs in three phases.

  • Prelims: 100 marks, 60 minutes (English 40 questions, Quantitative Aptitude 30, Reasoning 30), with no sectional cut-off.
  • Mains: an objective test of 170 questions for 200 marks in 3 hours, plus a Communication Skills descriptive test of 30 marks (email, situation analysis and report or precis writing).
  • Phase III: psychometric test, group exercise (20 marks) and interview (30 marks). Final merit is Mains normalised to 75 plus group exercise and interview normalised to 25.

Eligibility: age 21 to 30 as on 1 April 2026, and a graduate by 30 September 2026 (final-year students may apply provisionally). The attempt limit is 6 for unreserved and EWS candidates and 9 for OBC candidates and for persons with benchmark disability in the unreserved, EWS and OBC categories, with no limit for SC and ST. See the SBI PO syllabus and exam pattern and the PO vs Clerk comparison.

Frequently asked questions

What is the starting salary of an SBI PO?

The 2026 advertisement states a starting basic pay of ₹48,480 plus four advance increments. Allowances are added and deductions taken off, so the take-home amount differs from basic pay.

Is the ₹21.97 lakh CTC my annual take-home?

No. It is the advertisement's approximate CTC at Mumbai. Take-home pay is lower, because CTC includes employer-side costs and because tax and other deductions apply.

Do SBI PO and IBPS PO have the same pay scale?

In the 2026 notifications, yes: both print ₹48,480-2000/7-62,480-2340/2-67,160-2680/7-85,920. Allowances and service conditions follow each bank's rules.
