TNPSC Group 2 result 2026: prelims shortlist, mains and final rank
On this page
The TNPSC Group 2 and 2A result comes in stages, not in one announcement: the prelims result shortlists candidates for the mains at 1:10 per reservation group, the mains has a qualifying Tamil paper, and the final rank comes from Main Paper II marks alone, with no interview. As of 9 October 2026, no 2026 result is out. News reports put the 2026 prelims on 1 November 2026, which we have not confirmed in the official PDF.
The stages below come from Notification No. 11/2025, the latest Group 2/2A notification we have read in full. Confirm that the 2026 notification keeps the same scheme.
The stages and what each result tells you
| Stage | What is decided | Rule in the 2025 scheme |
|---|---|---|
| Prelims result | Who is shortlisted for the mains | Minimum 90 out of 300 for all communities; shortlist of 1:10 per reservation group; ties at the cut-off all admitted |
| Mains Paper I (Tamil Eligibility Test) | Whether Paper II is evaluated | Qualifying only: at least 40 out of 100; marks do not count for rank |
| Mains Paper II | Your rank | Group II: General Studies, 300 marks, minimum 90. Group IIA: computer-based objective test, 300 marks, minimum 90 |
| Final rank list | Order of merit for posts | Based on Paper II marks only; there is no interview |
Prelims marks are not carried forward. A candidate who scrapes through the prelims starts the mains on the same footing as the top scorer.
The prelims result
The prelims is a single 3-hour OMR paper with 200 questions for 300 marks. The minimum is 90 out of 300 for all communities, and candidates are shortlisted at 1:10 per reservation group. As an illustration only, if a reservation group had 20 vacancies, up to 200 candidates in that group would be shortlisted, plus anyone tied with the last of them. The actual numbers depend on the vacancies in the notification and any addendum. Because the 2025 notification was followed by an addendum (11B/2025, dated 22 December 2025) that revised some vacancies, the shortlist should be read against the final vacancy figures.
If you can estimate your prelims score, the Group 2 answer key page shows the method. The result itself lists qualified candidates by register number, so you check for your number rather than for a score.
Group II mains and Group IIA mains
You may be shortlisted for the Group II mains, the Group IIA mains, or both. If you are shortlisted for both, the mains fee is ₹300 instead of ₹150.
- Paper I, Tamil Eligibility Test (both groups): 100 marks, 3 hours, descriptive, SSLC standard. You need 40 to pass. Paper II is evaluated only if Paper I is passed, and candidates with a disability can be exempted from Paper I. Do not treat it as a formality. See the Tamil eligibility test page.
- Group II Paper II: General Studies at degree standard, descriptive, 300 marks, 3 hours, minimum 90. The mains preparation page covers Group 2 mains preparation.
- Group IIA Paper II: a computer-based test, objective, 200 questions (150 on General Studies and 50 on General Intelligence and Reasoning), 300 marks, 3 hours, minimum 90.
The Forester post also has an endurance test.
Final selection: no interview
In the 2025 scheme, neither Group II nor Group IIA has an interview. The word does not appear in the notification, and ranking is on Main Paper II marks. This is a change from older Group 2 articles that describe an interview post list and a non-interview list. The steps after the final rank list are announced in TNPSC's notices. The counselling page describes how counselling works in the Group 4 cycle we could verify; we have not verified the Group 2 steps, so follow the notices issued after the mains.
Since the rank is based on one paper, the Group 2 vs Group 2A comparison matters: Group IIA candidates compete on a computer-based objective paper, and Group II candidates on a descriptive paper.
How to check each result
- Keep your register number from the hall ticket.
- Open www.tnpsc.gov.in and go to the results or press-release section. TNPSC announces each stage with a notice.
- Open the PDF and search for your register number.
- Read the instructions on the same notice: they set the mains date, documents and next steps. In the 2025 cycle the mains date was announced together with the prelims result.
- Download the notice and keep it.
We have not verified past result release dates for Group 2, so this site gives no timeline. Treat dates quoted elsewhere with caution unless they link to a TNPSC notice.
Between the prelims result and the mains
The gap between stages is when many candidates lose ground, so plan it before the result.
- Start mains preparation the day the prelims ends, not the day the result arrives.
- Keep Tamil Eligibility Test practice weekly, since failing it makes Paper II irrelevant.
- For Group II, practise handwritten answers in 3 hours. For Group IIA, practise full-length objective papers on a screen.
- Keep your certificates ready in case a verification step is announced.
The annual planner page shows how the stages normally fit into a TNPSC year.
How PrepMatic helps
PrepMatic's mock tests are objective, so they are most useful for the prelims and for the Group IIA computer-based Paper II. The mock result shows your score, subject-wise breakdown and a readiness figure that updates as you take more tests, and mocks can be focused on your weak subjects. PrepMatic does not offer descriptive answer writing or evaluation, so Group II Paper II writing practice has to come from elsewhere. Details are on the Group 2 app page.
Frequently asked questions
When will the TNPSC Group 2 result 2026 be announced?
No result is out and TNPSC has not announced a date. Reports put the prelims on 1 November 2026. Watch www.tnpsc.gov.in for the result notice.
Is there an interview in Group 2?
Not in the 2025 scheme. The final rank is based on Main Paper II marks alone for both Group II and Group IIA. Check the 2026 notification to confirm it keeps this scheme.
How many candidates are shortlisted for the Group 2 mains?
The 2025 notification shortlists at 1:10 per reservation group, so ten candidates per vacancy, and all candidates tied at the last cut-off mark are included.
Do Group 2 prelims marks count in the final rank?
No. The prelims is a screening test. The final rank comes from Main Paper II.
What is the qualifying mark in the Tamil Eligibility Test?
You need 40 out of 100 in Paper I. It is a qualifying paper, so its marks do not count for rank, but Paper II is evaluated only if you pass it.
Can I be shortlisted for both Group II and Group IIA?
Yes, and the mains fee is then ₹300 in the 2025 notification. You sit the mains of each group you are shortlisted for.
