A TNPSC Group 1 result is really four lists: the prelims result, the mains shortlist, the interview call and the final rank list. Candidates are shortlisted for the mains at 1:20 per reservation group, called for the interview at 1:2 or 1:3, and ranked on 850 marks (750 from the mains and 100 from the interview). News reports put the 2026 prelims on 27 September 2026, and we have not verified that any 2026 result has been published, so check www.tnpsc.gov.in for the current status.

The stages below come from Notification No. 04/2025 (Advertisement No. 706), the latest Group 1 notification we have read in full. Confirm that the 2026 notification follows the same scheme.

The prelims result

The prelims is a 200-question, 300-mark OMR paper: General Studies (175 questions) and Aptitude and Mental Ability (25). It is a screening test. To appear in the shortlist you must reach the minimum qualifying mark, which was 120 for the Others category and 90 for BC, BCM, MBC/DC, SC, SC(A) and ST candidates in the 2025 notification. Qualifying is necessary, but being within the 1:20 ratio is what takes you to the mains.

An illustration, not a real figure: if a reservation group had 7 vacancies, 1:20 would shortlist up to 140 candidates from that group for the mains. The actual numbers depend on the vacancies in the notification.

Certificate verification and the mains

TNPSC does the onscreen certificate verification before the mains, so shortlisted candidates must respond to the notice by its deadline and have their documents ready. A claim you cannot back with a certificate is a risk, so check your community, educational and any disability documents the day the prelims result arrives.

The mains papers are descriptive:

  • Paper I, Tamil Eligibility Test: SSLC standard, 100 marks, 3 hours. You need 40, and it does not count for rank. Papers II to IV are evaluated only if you pass Paper I. Persons with disabilities may be exempted.
  • Papers II, III and IV, General Studies I, II and III: degree standard, 250 marks each, 3 hours each. The minimum across the three is 225 for reserved candidates and 300 for Others.

In the 2025 cycle the mains were held from 1 to 4 December 2025 at Chennai only, about five and a half months after the prelims on 15 June 2025. We have not verified the dates of the 2025 result releases, so treat the gap between the prelims and the mains as one cycle's experience, not a rule.

The interview call

After the mains, candidates are called for the interview at 1:2 per vacancy where a group has five or more vacancies, and 1:3 where it has four or fewer. The interview carries 100 marks and has no minimum. Because every mark counts towards the 850, the interview can move a rank in either direction. The Group 1 interview page covers the board and preparation.

The final list

The final merit list ranks candidates on 850 marks: 750 from the three General Studies papers and 100 from the interview. The Tamil Eligibility Test and the prelims are not counted. The 2025 notification had six posts (Deputy Collector, Assistant Commissioner for Commercial Taxes, DSP, Assistant Director of Rural Development, Assistant Commissioner of Labour and District Employment Officer), and TNPSC's notices after the final list set out how they are allotted. The DSP post is not open to persons with disabilities.

How to check each Group 1 result

  1. Keep your register number from your hall ticket.
  2. Open www.tnpsc.gov.in and look in the results or press-release section. TNPSC publishes each stage as a notice.
  3. Search the PDF for your register number.
  4. Read the whole notice. It sets the next dates, documents and deadlines.
  5. Download and keep a copy.

TNPSC identifies candidates by register number in its lists, as in the Group 4 counselling list we checked. Do not rely on third-party sites for the final word.

What to do between the stages

  • After the prelims: start mains preparation immediately, because the Group 1 mains answer writing skill takes months to build.
  • Before the mains: keep the Tamil Eligibility Test paper in your weekly practice.
  • After the mains: begin interview preparation straight away. Do not wait for the call.
  • Throughout: use the Group 1 preparation strategy to pace the year.

How PrepMatic helps

PrepMatic covers the Group 1 prelims only. Its 200-question mocks match the paper, the free assessment shows your weakest subjects, and the plan is built backwards from your exam date. Results show your score and subject-wise breakdown, and mocks can be focused on weak subjects. PrepMatic does not provide mains answer-writing practice or evaluation, or interview practice, so those stages need other resources. The Group 1 prelims app page explains this in detail.
