If you want a TNPSC Group 1 app, PrepMatic, Tamil Nadu's first AI app for TNPSC, supports the Group 1 prelims and only the prelims. It gives you 200-question mocks that match the paper (175 General Studies and 25 aptitude questions), a study plan built from your exam date, and a readiness score that updates as you test. It does not give mains answer-writing practice or interview preparation. Group 1 is a three-stage exam, so this page shows exactly where the app helps and where you need something else.

Where PrepMatic fits in the three stages

Group 1 (CCSE-I) has a prelims, a mains and an interview. The figures here are from the 2025 notification (No. 04/2025); the Group 1 exam pattern page has the full scheme.

StageWhat it isCounts for rank?PrepMatic
PrelimsObjective, 200 questions, 300 marks, 3 hoursNo, it screens candidatesCovered
MainsTamil Eligibility Test (qualifying, 40 out of 100) plus three descriptive General Studies papers of 250 marks eachYes, 750 marksNot covered
Interview100 marksYesNot covered

The final rank is on 850 marks: 750 from the three mains papers and 100 from the interview. The prelims adds nothing to that total. Its job is to get you into the mains, so everything you do for it is a means to an end. That is a reason to use your prelims time efficiently, not a reason to skip it.

For what the app leaves out, read these guides: how to write high-scoring mains answers and how to prepare for the interview. The Group 1 preparation strategy shows how to run objective and written practice together over about a year.

The prelims paper you are practising for

The minimum qualifying marks in the 2025 notification are 90 out of 300 for reserved categories (30%) and 120 for Others (40%). These are floors. Candidates are shortlisted for the mains at 1:20 per reservation group, so the line that actually matters depends on the vacancies and the paper, and is known only after the result. Do not aim at the minimum.

TNPSC's 2026 annual planner pencilled in 6 September 2026 for the Group 1 exam. That date has passed, and planner dates are tentative anyway, so read the notifications page on tnpsc.gov.in for the current cycle. If the prelims in that notification is still ahead of you, use its date. If it is behind you, set a target date you can defend for the next one and change it when the notification arrives. In 2025 the notification came on 1 April, applications closed on 30 April and the prelims was on 15 June, so the window between notification and exam can be short.

How to use PrepMatic for the prelims

  1. Take the free assessment. Choose TNPSC, then Group 1, and your exam language. It has about 15 multiple-choice questions with no timer. The result gives you a projected score, a readiness percentage and your weakest and strongest subjects. It works at subject level, so it cannot say which unit is the problem. The assessment guide explains how to read it.
  2. Set up your plan. Enter your exam date, your daily hours (light is 1 to 2, moderate 3 to 4, intense 5 or more) and your study days. You get a Today view and a Roadmap that breaks the time into months, weeks and topics. See how the planner works.
  3. Test each unit as you finish it. Topic tests are about 15 questions in 30 minutes, and coverage checkpoints test everything you have finished so far.
  4. Add full-length mocks. The Group 1 mock is 200 questions in 180 minutes. Start them once you have covered most units, then raise the frequency as the exam nears.
  5. Aim mocks at weak spots. You can generate a mock focused on your weak subjects, build a custom mock by choosing subjects, number of questions, duration and difficulty, or generate one from notes you upload.
  6. Watch the trend. Your score, a subject-wise breakdown, the subject that cost you the most marks, and your predicted score and readiness update with every test. Judge the direction over several mocks, not any one number.

You can choose Tamil as your exam language, so questions and mock tests are in Tamil. The dashboard and analytics screens are available in Tamil as well.

Where the hours go: the General Studies units

The Group 1 syllabus guide lists the six General Studies units with indicative question counts, which TNPSC treats as a guide, not a promise.

UnitQuestionsHow to use the app
Economy and development administration in Tamil Nadu50Ration topic tests here first
Indian polity40Topic test after each block, such as rights, executive, local government
History, culture and socio-political movements of Tamil Nadu40Topic tests; notes you upload can feed mocks for this unit
History of India and the national movement25Topic test after each era
General science10Coverage checkpoint is enough
Geography of India10Coverage checkpoint is enough

Those top three units are 130 of the 175 questions. The free Basic plan includes 5 topic tests, so spend them where the questions are. Aptitude is 25 questions that you can practise daily in short sets, and the aptitude guide lists the topics.

A rough timing split to rehearse in your mocks: about 30 minutes for the 25 aptitude questions, 130 minutes for the 175 General Studies questions and 20 minutes to check. That is under 45 seconds for each General Studies question, so speed matters. Adjust the split after your first two mocks.

What to keep in mind about the practice questions

PrepMatic's questions are AI-generated, not TNPSC's own past papers. Mock reviews give you the score and breakdown, but not an explanation for each answer. Only the assessment has explanations. So:

  • Use mock scores as a trend, not as a prediction of the real paper. The difficulty of an AI-generated paper is not the same as TNPSC's.
  • Calibrate against real papers. TNPSC publishes previous question papers, though the years listed vary, and the previous year questions guide explains the method of using them.
  • Keep your own error log. When you miss a question, write down whether you did not know it, forgot it, misread it or slipped, and fix it from your books.
  • The AI Study Tutor can explain a doubt in Tamil or English, but it can be wrong on exact facts and dates, so confirm what it says against standard books.

What to do when the prelims ends

Once you cross the prelims, PrepMatic stops being your main tool. Objective topic tests can still check whether you remember facts, but they do not train the skill that decides 750 of the 850 marks, which is writing a structured answer in limited time. Do not wait for the prelims result to begin writing. Start written practice early, and use the mains answer-writing guide and, near the end, the interview guide. If you are weighing the app against a course, the coaching vs self-study comparison is fair to both.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an app for TNPSC Group 1 preparation?

PrepMatic supports the Group 1 prelims with 200-question mocks, topic tests, a study plan and readiness tracking. It runs in your browser at prepmatic.in. It does not cover the mains or the interview.

Does PrepMatic cover Group 1 mains?

No. Group 1 mains papers are descriptive, and PrepMatic practice is multiple choice only. It has no answer-writing practice or evaluation. See the mains answer-writing guide for how to prepare.

How many questions are there in the Group 1 prelims?

In the 2025 notification, the prelims paper has 200 questions for 300 marks in 3 hours: 175 General Studies questions at degree standard and 25 aptitude and mental ability questions at SSLC standard. Confirm the pattern in the notification for your cycle.

Does the Group 1 prelims score count in the final rank?

No. The prelims is a screening test. The final rank is decided on the mains papers (750 marks) and the interview (100 marks), a total of 850. A strong prelims only gets you shortlisted.

Is PrepMatic free for Group 1?

The Basic plan is free forever with no credit card. It covers one exam, the AI study plan, 2 mock tests a month, 5 topic tests and 2 uploaded documents. Paid plans add more mocks, topic tests and uploads.
