PrepMatic lets TNPSC aspirants practise in Tamil. When you choose Tamil as your exam language, your questions and mock tests are in Tamil, and the dashboard and analytics screens are available in Tamil too. Language matters most in Group 4: Part A is a Tamil-only paper worth half the marks, and the General Studies and Aptitude parts are bilingual, so you will be reading in whichever language you trained in. This guide explains how to choose Tamil, what is and is not translated, and how to use that practice well.

Why practising in your exam language matters

The real TNPSC paper is a time game. Group 4 gives you 200 questions in 3 hours, which is 54 seconds a question. If you studied from Tamil-medium books but practise only on English questions, every question starts with a translation step. If that costs you just 5 seconds, it adds up to about 17 minutes across 200 questions, which is time for roughly 19 more questions.

The second reason is vocabulary. Tamil-medium school books teach terms such as அடிப்படை உரிமைகள் (Fundamental Rights), மொத்த உள்நாட்டு உற்பத்தி (Gross Domestic Product) and பணவீக்கம் (inflation). You recognise these on sight. A question that uses the English phrase for a concept you learned only in Tamil is a small hurdle, and small hurdles repeated 100 times in the General Studies section are what practice in the right language removes.

The same logic works in reverse. If you studied in English medium but want to be comfortable with Tamil Nadu history and culture questions (சங்க இலக்கியம் (Sangam literature), திருக்குறள் (Thirukkural) and similar topics) as they appear in the Tamil paper, practise some of them in Tamil.

Group 4: the Tamil paper and the bilingual paper

In the 2026 notification (No. 11/2026), the Group 4 paper is one 3-hour paper with 200 questions and 300 marks.

PartQuestionsMarksLanguage of the paper
Part A: Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test100150Tamil only
Part B: General Studies75150 together with Part CTamil and English
Part C: Aptitude and Mental Ability25Tamil and English

Two rules decide how you should practise.

  • Part A has a gate. You must score at least 40% (60 out of 150) in Part A, or Parts B and C are not evaluated. Part A marks also count towards your rank.
  • Part A is Tamil only. General English is offered in place of Part A only to eligible differently-abled candidates.

So "exam language" in practice means the language in which you will read Parts B and C. Part A is in Tamil for everyone. For the full marks and cut-off rules, read the Group 4 exam pattern. If you are preparing for Group 2 or 2A, the language rules differ: in the 2025 notification, the prelims language part could be General Tamil or General English, and the mains have a qualifying Tamil Eligibility Test.

How to choose Tamil as your exam language in PrepMatic

PrepMatic is Tamil Nadu's first AI app for TNPSC, built in Chennai, and Tamil is one of the two exam languages it offers for TNPSC (the other is English).

  1. During setup, choose TNPSC as your exam and then your group.
  2. At Preferred exam language, choose Tamil.
  3. Take the free assessment. Its questions will be in Tamil. The free TNPSC assessment guide explains what the result shows.
  4. To change the language later, open your Profile and update Preferred exam language. Mock tests you start afterwards use your updated choice.

Try this experiment in your first fortnight: take one full-length mock in Tamil and one in English, and compare your time per question and your accuracy. The gap tells you which language to choose on the day, and how much translation practice you need.

What is in Tamil, and what is not

Part of PrepMaticIn Tamil?
Practice questions and mock testsYes, when Tamil is your exam language
Dashboard and analytics screensYes, available in Tamil
Every other screen, button and message in the appNot guaranteed. Do not assume the whole app is translated
Descriptive writing practiceNot offered in any language; all practice is multiple choice

That last row matters for Group 2 and Group 1 aspirants. The Tamil Eligibility Test in their mains is a written paper with tasks such as translation, comprehension and letter writing, and PrepMatic does not provide writing practice or evaluation for it. Use previous question papers and a teacher or friend who reads Tamil well.

General Tamil practice (பொதுத்தமிழ்)

In Group 4, Part A is 100 questions across seven units at SSLC standard. TNPSC states that the unit-wise question counts are only indicative, and that the literature questions are based on school textbooks up to SSLC standard. The notification's unit names are in Tamil script; the Group 4 syllabus page lists what to cover, and the General Tamil guide explains how to study இலக்கணம் (grammar) and இலக்கியம் (literature).

PrepMatic's Group 4 full-length mock has the same shape as the real paper: 200 questions, with 100 General Tamil, 75 General Studies and 25 Aptitude. That makes it a practical way to rehearse the part of the paper that gates all the others.

Do not treat Tamil as the easy section because it is your mother tongue. Grammar rules, literary history and the precise wording of options trip up fluent speakers too. In your assessment result, if General Tamil shows up as your weakest subject, make it your first priority, because it is both a half-weight section and the qualifying gate.

A routine for Tamil-medium aspirants

  • Week 1: take the assessment in Tamil. Note your weakest and strongest subjects.
  • Study from Tamil-medium books, but keep a short two-column list of Tamil and English terms as you go, since the bilingual paper lets you read either version of a question. The books guide covers which Samacheer Kalvi books to use.
  • Practise in the language you will read in. Decide your reading language by your mock results, then stay with it.
  • Time the sections separately in mocks. One split to rehearse is about 60 minutes for Part A's 100 questions and 120 minutes for the 100 questions of Parts B and C. Adjust it to your own speed.
  • Rotate in one mock in the other language every few weeks to keep your English terms fresh.

If you did not study in Tamil, note that TNPSC requires adequate knowledge of Tamil: a Tamil-language qualification, Tamil-medium high school, or passing TNPSC's Second Class Language Test. The eligibility guide has the details. For the wider picture of PrepMatic, see the AI app for TNPSC overview.
