Best app for TNPSC preparation: eight criteria, and an honest scorecard
On this page
The best app for TNPSC preparation is the one that matches the current paper, lets you practise in your exam language, tells you honestly where you stand, and is clear about what it leaves out. No single app is best for every aspirant, and the right choice depends on your group. Below are eight criteria you can test in ten minutes each, followed by a scorecard for PrepMatic, Tamil Nadu's first AI app for TNPSC, that includes its gaps.
The eight criteria
| # | Criterion | Why it matters | A ten-minute test |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | It matches the current pattern | TNPSC changes schemes between notifications, and old patterns are still all over the internet | For Group 4, check that Part A is Tamil-only, 100 questions and 150 marks, with a 60-mark gate, and that General Studies has six units |
| 2 | It lets you practise in your exam language | Reading a question in a second language costs seconds, and 200 questions multiply that | Switch to Tamil and read ten questions. Do they read like Tamil, or like a translation? |
| 3 | It has full-length mocks that match the real paper | Stamina and time per question are skills of their own | Count the questions and the timer: 200 questions, 180 minutes for Group 4, Group 1 prelims and Group 2/2A prelims |
| 4 | Its plan is tied to your exam date and hours | A fixed timetable assumes everyone has the same time | Change the exam date and the daily hours. Does the plan change? |
| 5 | Its analytics are honest | A single total score tells you nothing about what to fix | Look for marks by subject. Be wary of any promise such as a percentage chance of selection |
| 6 | You can trust the questions and the review | Wrong facts in a Tamil Nadu history question will be learnt as true | Check five answers against a Samacheer Kalvi book. Is the answer right, and is there an explanation? |
| 7 | It says what it does not cover | Many exams have descriptive stages and interviews | Find the sentence about mains and interview. If there is none, ask |
| 8 | It has a real free tier | You should see the product before paying | Finish a diagnostic and one topic test without entering a card |
Criterion 1 is the one aspirants most often miss. A Group 4 test that offers every candidate a General English alternative to Part A, or lists ten General Studies units, was written for an earlier scheme. The Group 4 exam pattern page has the 2026 version.
How PrepMatic scores, including the gaps
PrepMatic is a web app: you open it in your browser at prepmatic.in. Here is how it measures up, using only what the app does today.
| Criterion | What PrepMatic does | The honest gap |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Current pattern | Full-length mocks follow the real paper: 200 questions, 300 marks, 180 minutes for Group 4, Group 1 prelims and Group 2/2A prelims | Patterns change per notification, so check yours on tnpsc.gov.in |
| 2. Exam language | Tamil as your exam language gives Tamil questions and mock tests; the dashboard and analytics screens are in Tamil | The whole app is not in Tamil. See the Tamil app guide |
| 3. Mocks | Full-length mocks, plus custom mocks where you choose subjects, question count, duration and difficulty, plus topic tests of about 15 questions in 30 minutes | Mocks are on screen, so OMR shading needs separate practice. There is no dedicated Group 2A mains mock |
| 4. Plan | Built from your exam date, daily hours (light, moderate or intense) and study days, with a Today view and a Roadmap, plus coverage checkpoints | The plan does not rebuild itself after missed days. You re-plan |
| 5. Analytics | Score, subject-wise breakdown, the subject that cost you the most marks, accuracy over time, speed per question, and a predicted score and readiness that update as you test | The assessment works at subject level, not topic level. Predicted scores are estimates. There is no rank or percentile comparison |
| 6. Questions and review | Mocks can be focused on your weak subjects or built from notes you upload | Questions are AI-generated, not TNPSC's own papers. Mock reviews do not explain each answer (the assessment does). Doubts go to the AI tutor, which can be wrong on exact facts |
| 7. Coverage | Objective practice for Group 4, VAO, Group 2/2A prelims and Group 2A mains Paper II, Group 1 prelims, and Combined Technical Services (confirm the stream in the app) | No descriptive, mains or interview practice, no live classes, no human mentors |
| 8. Free tier | A free forever Basic plan with no credit card: one exam, the AI study plan, 2 mock tests a month, 5 topic tests and 2 uploaded documents | Mocks are the scarce resource on Basic. Paid plans add more; check the in-app plans for current details |
Criteria 6 and 7 are where PrepMatic is weakest, and they are the reason the next section exists.
Where PrepMatic is the wrong choice, or not enough
- You need a teacher to take you through whole subjects. The AI tutor answers individual doubts in Tamil or English, but it doesn't teach a subject from scratch. A teacher, a good course or a study group fills that gap, and the coaching vs self-study guide compares the routes fairly.
- You want TNPSC's own past papers. They are on the official site, and a good method for them is in the previous year questions guide. PrepMatic is not a substitute.
- You are preparing for a descriptive stage. Group 1 mains, Group II Main Paper II and the Tamil Eligibility Tests need handwriting practice and feedback.
- You want live classes or a human mentor. The app has neither.
Which target needs what beyond an app
| Your target | An app can cover | You will also need |
|---|---|---|
| Group 4 and VAO | The whole paper is objective: Tamil, General Studies and aptitude | Samacheer Kalvi books, OMR practice on paper, and typewriting qualifications for Typist and Steno posts |
| Group 2A | Prelims and the computer-based Main Paper II | Written practice for the qualifying Tamil Eligibility Test |
| Group 2 | Prelims only | Descriptive answer practice for Main Paper II |
| Group 1 | Prelims only | Mains answer writing and interview preparation |
For group-specific detail, see the Group 4, Group 2 and Group 1 prelims app guides.
A 30-minute trial for any TNPSC app
- Choose your group and exam language. Note whether the app asks for your exam date.
- Take its diagnostic or free test. See what the result gives you beyond a total score. PrepMatic's free assessment is about 15 untimed questions.
- Read ten questions and check five answers against a textbook.
- Look at the plan or schedule. Change your hours and see whether it responds.
- Open one full-length mock and check the question count, timer and Part-wise split against the notification.
- Find out what is locked behind payment, and whether the limits suit how often you will test.
If an app fails step 3, stop. If it passes everything but you still need a subject taught from scratch, you have your answer: the app plus a teacher.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best app for TNPSC Group 4 preparation?
There is no single best app. Choose by the eight criteria above: a Tamil-only Part A in the mock, practice in Tamil, a 200-question paper, a plan tied to your exam date and honest analytics. PrepMatic is one option that does these for Group 4, with the gaps listed in the scorecard.
Is a free TNPSC app enough?
Often it is enough to start, and some aspirants never need more. A free tier plus the official previous question papers and Samacheer Kalvi books is a workable base. What usually runs out first is the number of mocks, so check the limit before you plan around it.
Is PrepMatic available as a mobile app?
PrepMatic is a web app. You open it in your browser at prepmatic.in, and there is no app-store download.
Are there TNPSC apps that work in Tamil?
Yes. Look for practice questions and mock tests in Tamil, not only a translated menu. PrepMatic lets you choose Tamil as your exam language, and its dashboard and analytics screens are available in Tamil.
How accurate are predicted scores in TNPSC apps?
Treat any predicted score as an estimate that gets better as you take more tests. It cannot know the real paper's difficulty or the final cut-off. Watch the trend across several mocks, and be wary of an app that promises a selection chance.
