Which GATE exam cities are in Tamil Nadu?
The GATE 2027 site lists 24 tentative exam cities in Tamil Nadu in the IIT Madras zone: Chennai South, Chennai North, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Erode, Kanchipuram, Kanyakumari-Nagercoil, Karaikudi, Krishnagiri, Madurai, Namakkal, Ooty, Pollachi, Ramanathapuram, Salem, Thanjavur, Theni, Thoothukudi, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore and Virudhunagar. The list is tentative, so confirm it on the official site while you apply.
Two things to note about the list
- Chennai appears twice, as Chennai South and Chennai North, so choose the one that suits you.
- Several of the cities are small district towns, such as Ooty, Pollachi and Ramanathapuram. If you live in one of them, you may not need to travel to a large city.
How city choice works
- You choose six cities, and all six must be from the same zone. The Tamil Nadu cities above are in the IIT Madras zone.
- You do not pick your exact city: the organisers allot one, and the city allotment for GATE 2027 is announced on 4 January 2027. The admit card date has not been announced yet.
- If you take two papers, the second may be at a different centre in the same city.
- GATE 2027 has no exam centres outside India. Foreign nationals and NRIs sit the exam in Indian cities.
Practical tips
- Choose six cities you could realistically travel to, since you cannot be sure which one you will be allotted.
- Do not book travel or accommodation until the city allotment and the admit card are out.
- Remember that an admit card carries your session; the dates are 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027, with sessions at 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM (GATE 2027 exam dates).
- Carry the photo ID you verified through DigiLocker.
IIT Madras is the organiser, and it is based in Chennai (who is conducting GATE 2027). The registration steps are in the GATE 2027 registration guide.
