Exam questions answered · GATE
How many times can I attempt GATE?
On this page
There is no limit. The GATE 2027 rules state no cap on the number of attempts, so you can sit GATE every year. Each attempt is a fresh application with its own fee, and an older valid score stays usable while it lasts.
What counts as one attempt
An attempt is one application cycle. Within a cycle you may sit one paper, or two if the second is on the allowed list for the first. Both papers go in a single application, and the official rule is that multiple applications are rejected without refund. So taking two papers is still one attempt, and you must not submit two separate forms.
What each attempt needs
- A new registration on the GOAPS portal, through DigiLocker for Indian nationals.
- The application fee for each paper: for GATE 2027, ₹1,000 (regular period) for women, SC, ST and PwD candidates, and ₹2,000 for all others. The extended period is ₹1,500 and ₹2,500 respectively. See the GATE application fee for the detail.
- A live face photo at registration, and the same photo ID at the exam centre.
Marks do not carry over from one attempt to the next, and the qualifying marks are computed afresh from each year's candidates. What can be reused is a still-valid score from an earlier year, as the next section explains.
Do old scores still help?
Yes, within their validity. A GATE score is valid for three years from the result date. COAP 2026, the common offer acceptance portal for M.Tech offers at IITs and IISc, accepted GATE 2026, 2025 and 2024 scores from Indian nationals. So a score from a few years ago can still be used where the institute accepts it, and a later attempt can add a better one. Check each institute's rule on which score it uses. We do not state a general "best score" rule because it is set by the admitting institute. See how long a GATE score is valid.
Using repeat attempts well
Having unlimited tries does not mean every try is cheap. Each costs a year of preparation and a fee. Before a repeat attempt, work out whether marks were lost to the General Aptitude section, to one subject block, or to wrong answers in MCQs (which carry negative marking). The 2027 syllabus was revised for every paper, so recheck topics rather than recycling old notes. Preparing for GATE sets out plans.
PSUs and institutes may set age or percentage conditions even though GATE has none; see is there an age limit for GATE.
