Exam questions answered · GATE
Does every GATE paper have engineering mathematics?
On this page
No. In GATE 2027, 17 papers have a separate engineering mathematics block of 13 marks, and the XE paper has a compulsory 15-mark engineering mathematics section (XE0). The other papers either have no separate block or build the maths into their subject sections.
Papers with a 13-mark engineering mathematics block
AE, AG, BM, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, ES, IN, ME, MN, MT, NM, PE and PI. In each of these, the 100 marks split as 15 for General Aptitude, 13 for engineering mathematics specific to that paper, and 72 for the subject. The maths is paper-specific, not a common syllabus.
Papers with no separate block
| Paper | How maths appears |
|---|---|
| CY, EY, PH | 85 marks of subject, no separate engineering mathematics block |
| MA, ST | 85 marks of subject, where mathematics or statistics is itself the subject |
| DA | 85 marks of subject, including probability and statistics, linear algebra, and calculus and optimization as full sections |
| RA | Engineering Mathematics is a unit (A.1) inside the 60-mark Part A |
| AR, GE, GG, XH, XL | The marks table shows no separate engineering mathematics block |
| XE | XE0 Engineering Mathematics, 15 marks, compulsory, then two sections of 35 marks each |
What the maths covers in common papers
The topics differ by branch. In the 2027 syllabi, for example:
| Branch | Engineering mathematics topics |
|---|---|
| CS | Discrete maths (logic, sets and relations, groups, graphs, combinatorics), linear algebra, calculus, probability and statistics |
| EC | Linear algebra, calculus, differential equations, vector analysis, complex analysis, probability and statistics |
| ME | Linear algebra, calculus, differential equations, complex variables, probability and statistics, numerical methods |
| CE | Linear algebra, calculus, ODE and PDE, probability and statistics, numerical methods |
Topic lists were revised for 2027, the first revision in about five years, so use the 2027 syllabus for your paper. Branch-wise detail and preparation advice are in GATE engineering mathematics.
What this means for you
- If your paper has the 13-mark block, it is worth 13% of the paper and has a defined topic list for your branch, which makes it a good place to build marks early.
- If it does not, check your paper's syllabus for where linear algebra, probability and calculus appear. In DA, they are sections of their own.
- All papers have General Aptitude, 15 marks; see GATE general aptitude.
The split of the 65 questions is in how many questions are in GATE, and the list of papers in how many papers there are in GATE 2027.
