Is a calculator allowed in GATE?
On this page
Only the on-screen virtual scientific calculator that the GATE test software provides is allowed. You may not bring a physical calculator, and phones and watches in the hall lead to disqualification. The calculator is built into the test screen, so there is nothing to carry.
What is and is not allowed
| Item | Allowed? |
|---|---|
| Virtual scientific calculator on the test screen | Yes |
| Physical calculator of any type | No |
| Mobile phone | No: leads to disqualification |
| Watch | No: leads to disqualification |
| Scribble pad | Yes, one at a time |
The GATE 2027 FAQs state these rules. Rough work goes on the scribble pad, and you get one at a time.
Why practising on the virtual calculator matters
A virtual calculator is a different tool from the handheld one you may have used for years, so get used to its layout and its scientific functions before the exam. Numerical answer type (NAT) questions are keyed in on a virtual keypad too. NAT answers carry no negative marking, but a mistyped answer is simply wrong, so careful entry matters as much as the calculation.
Practise it by:
- Trying the official mock-test links. The GATE 2026 site hosts them; check the GATE 2027 site for the current ones.
- Doing your own practice papers with an on-screen scientific calculator, not a handheld one.
- Working out which steps to do on the scribble pad and which on the calculator, so you do not retype long expressions.
Other exam-hall rules to know
- You can log in up to 15 minutes after the start, but you do not get extra time.
- The same photo ID verified through DigiLocker at registration must be shown at the centre. Aadhaar is preferred; passport, PAN, voter ID and driving licence are also accepted.
- The test is 3 hours, in English only.
