Is there an age limit for GATE?
On this page
No. GATE has no age limit: you can apply at any age if you are in the third year or above of an undergraduate degree, or have completed a government-approved degree. There is no limit on the number of attempts either. The age limits you may meet come later, from the PSU or institute that uses your score.
What the GATE organisers say
The GATE 2027 eligibility rules, published by IIT Madras on the official site and in the Information Brochure, list degrees and years of study. They name no maximum age, and no ceiling on how many times you can sit the exam. Your date of birth is pulled in from DigiLocker at registration, but the eligibility rules set no age cut-off.
This holds for foreign nationals as well. They pay the full fee and must sit the exam in an Indian city, because GATE 2027 has no centres outside India.
Where age limits do appear
A valid GATE score is a ticket to a process, and the process sets its own conditions.
| Who uses the score | Age position |
|---|---|
| GATE itself | No age limit |
| PSUs recruiting through GATE | Each sets its own limit |
| Institutes admitting to M.Tech or PhD | Set their own conditions |
A current example is the POWERGRID Engineer Trainee 2027 advertisement (No. CC/03/2026, dated 24 September 2026), which sets an upper age limit of 28 years as on 31 March 2027 and a minimum of 60% in the degree. Other PSUs differ, and limits and relaxations change every year, so open the advertisement for the post you want. We do not list other PSUs' limits because they are not confirmed for 2027.
What this means for you
- If you are older than the typical candidate, you can still sit GATE and use it for M.Tech, MS or PhD admission, where institutes decide their own conditions.
- If you want a PSU job, check the age limit in the advertisement before you invest a year. A PSU that recruited through GATE in one cycle may not do so in the next.
- Keep the score alive. It is valid for three years from the result date; see how long a GATE score is valid.
Whether you can try again if the first attempt falls short is answered in how many times you can attempt GATE. For the PSU route, see can I get a PSU job through GATE.
