Can I get a PSU job through GATE?
On this page
Yes, if a PSU advertises for your branch and you qualify in the matching GATE paper. GATE is the entry ticket; each PSU then runs its own selection, with its own age limit, minimum degree marks and rounds. A qualified score does not guarantee a job.
How the process works
- You write GATE and qualify in a paper that matches the post.
- A PSU publishes its own advertisement asking for a GATE score in particular papers. For the 2027 cycle, POWERGRID's came out in September 2026, months before the exam.
- You apply to the PSU separately. It shortlists using your GATE score and may add a group discussion, an interview or both.
The GATE organisers do not recruit for PSUs. The GATE 2027 brochure lists PSUs that have used GATE scores in past years, but that list does not show who will recruit this year.
A verified example for the GATE 2027 cycle
POWERGRID advertised Engineer Trainee recruitment through GATE 2027 on 24 September 2026 (Advt. No. CC/03/2026):
| Item | POWERGRID ET-2027 |
|---|---|
| Papers | Electrical (EE), Civil (CE), Computer Science (CS), Electronics (EC) |
| Upper age limit | 28 years as on 31 March 2027 |
| Minimum degree marks | 60% |
| Training pay | Basic ₹40,000 (scale ₹40,000 to 1,40,000) |
| Approx. cost to company | ₹11.00 lakh during training, ₹22.50 lakh after |
| Selection process | To be notified later |
These figures are from the advertisement itself and apply to this post only. Final-year students may apply if their results are out by 31 August 2027.
Which other PSUs?
For the earlier cycle, GATE 2026, PSUs and government bodies that announced recruitment through GATE included Engineers India Ltd, NHAI, GAIL (India), the National Informatics Centre (a government body, not a PSU), OPTCL, NHIDCL, NPCIL and POWERGRID, in various papers. We do not claim any other PSU is recruiting through GATE 2027, because each decides year by year and announces it in its own notice. The Cabinet Secretariat also recruits Group-A posts on GATE score.
What to do now
- Choose your paper with the job in mind. Match the paper codes in recent advertisements to your branch.
- Track age limits and degree percentages early. GATE has none (is there an age limit for GATE), but PSUs do.
- Know that the score matters. A higher GATE score helps the shortlist (what is a good GATE score).
