There is no single good GATE score, because the answer depends on where you want to use it. A General-category candidate who exactly meets the qualifying mark gets a GATE score of 350, and the average of the top 0.1% of candidates (or the top 10, whichever is larger) corresponds to 900. What counts as good is set by the institute or PSU you are aiming at, not by GATE.

How the score is built

GATE reports a score on a scale up to 1000, using this formula for the General category:

Score = 350 + 550 × (M − Mq) / (Mt − Mq)

M is your marks, Mq is the General-category qualifying mark for your paper and Mt is the mean of the top 0.1% (or top 10) candidates. Here is what the formula gives for a General candidate at different positions between Mq and Mt:

Your position between Mq and MtGATE score
At Mq350
One quarter of the way487.5
Halfway625
Three quarters of the way762.5
At Mt900

For multi-session papers, marks are normalised first; see GATE score and normalisation.

The qualifying mark is the floor, not the target

The General-category qualifying mark is max(25, min(40, μ + σ)) out of 100, where μ and σ are the mean and standard deviation of all candidates in the paper. So it always lies between 25 and 40. OBC-NCL and EWS candidates need 0.9 times that, and SC, ST and PwD candidates 2/3 of it.

As an illustration only, the GATE 2026 General qualifying marks were 30.0 in CS, 26.4 in EC, 25.2 in ME and 40.0 in AR. They change every year, and no 2027 figure exists until after the exam.

Good for what?

  • PSU jobs. Each PSU shortlists by its own rule, usually with extra rounds, so the target is "above last year's shortlisting level for that PSU and paper". Find that in its advertisement and notices (can I get a PSU job through GATE).
  • M.Tech and PhD. Institutes set their own minimum scores and tests. The Ministry of Education guidelines say at least 70% weightage to GATE in PG admission, with the rest from a test, interview or academic record. Look up your target institute's previous cut-offs.

How to set a target

  1. List three institutes or PSUs you would join.
  2. Find, where it is published, the lowest score or rank each admitted last time.
  3. Aim for a clear margin above the highest of them, and track your mock scores against it.

We give no "safe score": none can be stated without official cut-offs, and the 2027 syllabus revision makes past patterns less reliable.
