Do you get a stipend for M.Tech after GATE?
On this page
It can. The GATE 2027 site cites M.Tech assistance of ₹12,400 a month, generally for 22 months, for candidates admitted with a valid GATE score. But it is not automatic: the admitting institute manages the scholarship and decides how many students receive it, and qualifying in GATE does not guarantee admission or a scholarship.
M.Tech assistance
| Item | Figure |
|---|---|
| Monthly assistance | ₹12,400 |
| Duration | Generally 22 months |
| Total over 22 months | ₹2,72,800 |
| Basis | AICTE PG Scholarship (GATE/GPAT) guidelines, as cited on the GATE 2027 site |
The total is simply 12,400 × 22. The monthly figure and the period come from the GATE 2027 website's own page on opportunities. Scholarship rules are set by AICTE and the Ministry of Education and can be revised, so treat the number as the current published figure.
Direct PhD fellowship
For admission to a PhD programme directly after B.E., B.Tech. or M.Sc. with a valid GATE score, the Ministry of Finance circular of 21 June 2023 (33(14)PFC-II/2018) gives:
| Years | Fellowship per month |
|---|---|
| Years 1 and 2 | ₹37,000 |
| Years 3 to 5 | ₹42,000 |
Who decides, and what you must do
- The institute decides. The scholarship is managed by the admitting institute, which decides how many students get it.
- Admission comes first. You still need an offer. For IITs and IISc, offers are accepted, retained or rejected through the COAP portal, and you apply to each institute separately. COAP is not an application portal.
- The 70% rule. Under Ministry of Education guidelines, PG admission gives at least 70% weightage to GATE, with the rest from a test, interview or academic record. See what is a good GATE score.
- Some colleges admit with a GATE score but without the scholarship. Read each programme's notice.
Stipend or job?
The assistance supports your studies. A PSU job is a separate route with its own advertisement, age limit and selection (can I get a PSU job through GATE).
The score must be valid when you apply; see how long a GATE score is valid. For admission routes and counselling, read after GATE: PSU and M.Tech.
