NMC (National Medical Commission) and NEET
On this page
NMC, the National Medical Commission, is the national regulator of medical education. For NEET-UG its notices and regulations set the syllabus, the Class 12 qualifying marks and the qualifying percentile. It does not conduct the exam, which is NTA's job, and does not run counselling, which belongs to MCC and the states.
What NMC decides
| Matter | Rule |
|---|---|
| NEET-UG syllabus | Notified by NMC through its Under Graduate Medical Education Board |
| Qualifying percentile | 50th General, 40th SC/ST/OBC, 45th General-PwBD, 40th SC/ST/OBC-PwBD |
| Minimum Class 12 marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology together | 50% General, 40% SC/ST/OBC, 45% General-PwBD, 40% SC/ST/OBC-PwBD |
| Subjects required | Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English, passed individually |
The Class 12 marks rule and the subject rule are quoted in the Tamil Nadu 2026-27 prospectus from the Graduate Medical Education Regulations 1997, as amended in 2018. The percentile rule can be relaxed for a year by the Government of India in consultation with NMC if too few candidates qualify.
The NMC syllabus
NEET has used the NMC-prescribed syllabus since NEET 2024. The NEET-UG 2026 syllabus was notified on 22 December 2025 and was unchanged from 2025. NMC lists units by subject, not by class: 20 units in Physics, 20 in Chemistry and 10 in Biology. It says the syllabus is aligned with NCERT for Classes 11 and 12, so any class-wise split you see is a mapping to NCERT chapters, not an NMC rule.
Older articles still use the pre-2024 syllabus, which had topics such as Solid State, Surface Chemistry and Polymers that are no longer in NMC's chemistry unit list. Always check the unit list on nmc.org.in. The NEET syllabus guide maps it to NCERT chapters.

Frequently asked questions
Did NMC replace the Medical Council of India?
Yes. NMC is the current regulator and took over from the Medical Council of India, which is why older material mentions MCI.
Where can I read the official NEET syllabus?
On nmc.org.in, in the notice for the exam year, and in the NTA information bulletin.
