Nativity certificate for Tamil Nadu NEET counselling
On this page
A nativity certificate is the document that proves you are a native of Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu's 2026-27 prospectus requires it for the Government Quota, and it states that a permanent residence certificate is not accepted instead. It is one of the documents you upload on the Selection Committee's portal.
Who needs it
The Government Quota is for TN natives. The prospectus sets out these cases:
| Candidate | What the prospectus says |
|---|---|
| Native of Tamil Nadu | Applies with a TN Nativity Certificate |
| TN native who studied Std VI to XII outside TN | May apply with the nativity and community certificates plus an undertaking |
| Native of another state who studied Std VI to XII continuously in TN | Considered under the Open category, as per clause 8(j) |
| Native of another state who studied VI to XII wholly or partly outside TN | Barred under clause 11(a) |
| Candidate who sat NEET 2026 as a native of another state | Cannot apply as a TN native |
| OCI or PIO card holder | Eligible, but only for open category seats, with no reservation |
The nativity clause is "subject to the outcome" of writ petitions pending in the Madras High Court, so read the latest prospectus and notices.

- Check that the name and date of birth match your NEET records.
- Keep scans of the certificate along with the Class X, XI and XII mark sheets, the transfer certificate and proof of study from Std VI to XII.
The full document list is in the Tamil Nadu counselling guide. The state quota page explains how the quota works.
