NRI quota in NEET counselling
On this page
The NRI quota is a reserved share of seats in private medical colleges for candidates who qualify under the state's NRI rules. In Tamil Nadu 2026-27, it is 15% of self-financing college seats. NEET qualification is still mandatory for every seat.
Where it sits among private college seats
Tamil Nadu splits seats in self-financing and state private university colleges three ways: the Government Quota at 50% or more, the management quota at 35% or less, and the NRI quota at 15% of self-financing seats. The NRI share is separate from the management share and has its own conditions.
Two things that get confused
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| NRI quota | A share of private college seats for candidates eligible under the counselling authority's NRI rules |
| Sitting NEET as an NRI | NEET-UG is open to Indian citizens, NRIs, OCI and PIO card holders and foreign nationals; this only decides who can take the exam |
Sitting NEET as an NRI does not by itself place you in the NRI quota. The prospectus defines who is eligible, what proof is needed and what the fees are. Check the Management Quota prospectus, issued on 28 June 2026, and the Government Quota prospectus on tnmedicalselection.net. We could not confirm the eligibility and fee conditions for this quota from the sources we read, so none are stated here.
Seat conversion
Unfilled seats can be converted to another quota in later rounds. On 8 October 2026 the Selection Committee posted a notice titled "NRI & Minority seats conversion – Round 3", the same day it extended the Round 3 schedule. If you are interested in these seats, read such notices, since conversion changes what is on offer.
OCI and PIO card holders
OCI and PIO card holders can apply for Tamil Nadu's Government Quota, but only in the open category and without reservation, following the Supreme Court order of 3 February 2023. That is a different route from the NRI quota.
Read the Tamil Nadu counselling guide for the process, and compare with the state quota.
