NEET tie-breaking rules: how equal scores are ranked
On this page
NEET tie-breaking is the set of rules NTA applies to rank candidates who have the same total marks. Biology marks are compared first, then Chemistry, then Physics, then the number of wrong answers. If candidates are still level, a random process under an independent expert committee decides.
The order of criteria
This is the order reported from NTA's 2025 bulletin, and reported again for 2026. We did not see the official 2026 bulletin wording, so check the latest bulletin.
| Step | Criterion | Who ranks higher |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Marks in Biology (Botany and Zoology) | Higher |
| 2 | Marks in Chemistry | Higher |
| 3 | Marks in Physics | Higher |
| 4 | Incorrect answers in all subjects | Fewer |
| 5 | Incorrect answers in Biology | Fewer |
| 6 | Incorrect answers in Chemistry | Fewer |
| 7 | Incorrect answers in Physics | Fewer |
| 8 | Random process under an independent expert committee | Decided by the process |
Each step applies only if the previous one leaves the candidates level.
A worked example
Two candidates both score 640.
| Biology | Chemistry | Physics | Total | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Candidate A | 330 | 160 | 150 | 640 |
| Candidate B | 320 | 165 | 155 | 640 |
Step 1 settles it. A has 330 in Biology against B's 320, so A gets the better rank even though B scored more in Chemistry and Physics.
What is no longer used
Age (the older candidate ranking first) and the application number are no longer tie-breakers. Many older articles still list age, so ignore those. The final random step was added in the 2025 bulletin.
What this means for you
Biology is 360 of 720 marks, so it is the first tie-breaker and also half the paper. Accurate Biology answers help twice, once in your total and again when scores tie. Because a wrong answer costs a mark, discipline about guessing also helps at steps 4 to 7. See the pattern for the marking scheme and marks vs rank for how ties affect rank estimates. Your All India Rank is the result of this ordering.
Frequently asked questions
Is age still a tie-breaker in NEET?
No. Age and application number have been removed from the criteria.
Do tie-breaking rules apply in state counselling?
State authorities build their merit lists from NEET scores. Check the state's prospectus for how it treats equal scores.
