All India Rank (AIR) in NEET: what it means
On this page
All India Rank (AIR) is your position in the national merit list NTA prepares from NEET-UG scores. The highest scorer is AIR 1, and the rank number grows as the score falls. NTA's scorecard also shows a category rank and a percentile. AIR is the rank MCC counselling is built on, but it is not the rank Tamil Nadu uses to fill its own seats.
AIR, category rank and state rank
| Rank | Compared with | Where it matters |
|---|---|---|
| All India Rank | Every candidate who appeared | MCC counselling for All India Quota, deemed universities, central institutions, AIIMS and JIPMER |
| Category rank | Candidates in your own category | Reserved seats in that category |
| State rank | Candidates who applied to that state's counselling | State quota and private college seats |
States and MCC build their own merit lists from NTA's results. The Tamil Nadu prospectus says its merit list is based on the NEET score among the candidates who applied to it. A candidate's number on that list is therefore smaller than the AIR, because only applicants to the state counselling are ranked against each other.
How ties are settled
Many candidates share the same score, so NTA applies a fixed order to separate them: Biology marks first, then Chemistry, then Physics, then fewer wrong answers, ending in a random process under an independent expert committee. Age and application number no longer count. The full order, with a worked example, is on the NEET tie-breaking page.
Why you cannot read AIR straight off your marks
The marks-to-rank mapping shifts every year with paper difficulty and the number of candidates. In 2026, 19,99,895 candidates appeared and the top score was 715 out of 720. Treat any marks-to-rank table as a rough guide; the marks vs rank guide shows how to estimate responsibly.
Frequently asked questions
Is AIR the same as my Tamil Nadu state rank?
No. AIR compares you with every NEET candidate in India. The state rank compares you only with applicants to Tamil Nadu counselling, so the two numbers differ.
Does a good AIR guarantee a seat?
No. A seat depends on your quota, category, the choices you lock and the closing ranks of that round. Those are published only in MCC and state allotment lists.
