Choice filling in NEET counselling
On this page
Choice filling is the step in NEET counselling where you list the colleges and courses you would accept, in your order of preference, on the MCC or state portal. The system then allots you a seat from that list using your rank and category. You cannot ask for a seat that is not on your list, so this step matters as much as your score.
How the order decides your seat
The portal looks at your rank, checks your first choice, and gives you that seat if one is open in your quota and category at your rank. If not, it moves to your second choice, then the third, and stops at the first seat you qualify for. Imagine you list 30 choices. If you are allotted choice 7, seats in choices 1 to 6 were already filled by candidates ranked above you.
This is why the order is a ranking of what you want, not a list of what you expect. Putting a safe college at the top means you can never be offered anything better.
Building a good list
- Start from the seat matrix. The seat matrix shows which colleges have seats in which quota.
- List more choices than you think you need. A short list is the commonest way to end up with no seat in a round.
- Order by preference, honestly. Put the colleges you would most like first, and leave out any you would refuse to join.
- Use official closing-rank data. Allotment lists from earlier rounds and years are on mcc.nic.in and tnmedicalselection.net. Avoid coaching-site "expected cut-off" numbers.
- Fill separately for each track. MCC and the Tamil Nadu Selection Committee run their own choice filling.
From filling to locking
Choices can be edited until the portal's deadline, then you must lock them, as explained in choice locking. The Tamil Nadu prospectus states that choices cannot be changed once locked. The counselling process guide covers the whole sequence, and what it takes for a government seat explains how to set a realistic target.
Frequently asked questions
Is choice filling the same as registration?
No. Registration comes first and gives you access. Choice filling is a separate step after it, within a window set for each round.
Can I fill choices for MCC and for Tamil Nadu together?
They are separate portals with their own schedules, so you fill your list on each. The same preferences can be entered on both.
