Seat matrix in NEET counselling
On this page
A seat matrix is the official table that lists every participating college, the course (MBBS or BDS) and how many seats there are in each quota and category. Counselling authorities publish one before choice filling, so you can see what is on offer. It tells you how many seats exist. It does not tell you what rank you need for them.
What a seat matrix shows
- The college name and the course.
- The number of seats by quota, for example All India Quota, state quota, management quota or NRI quota.
- Seats set aside for special categories such as PwD, sports and ex-servicemen, in states that publish them.
Tamil Nadu publishes its matrix as an annexure to the prospectus. The 2026-27 version is described as tentative, which means numbers can change before counselling or between rounds.
Tamil Nadu 2026-27 numbers, from the tentative matrix
| Item | Seats |
|---|---|
| Government medical colleges | 36 colleges, 5,050 MBBS seats |
| Of which All India Quota | 753 |
| Of which state quota | 4,247 |
| Ward seats | 50 (Coimbatore ESIC 20, Erode Perundurai 30) |
| ESIC Medical College, K.K. Nagar, Chennai | 149 seats, 97 state quota |
| Government dental colleges | 250 BDS seats (37 All India Quota, 213 state quota) |
Ward seats are for wards of insured persons at Coimbatore and transport-corporation wards at Perundurai. Treat these as indicative until you check the latest document on tnmedicalselection.net.
Using it well
- Look at the quota first. The same college can have both All India Quota and state quota seats, and they are counselled by different bodies. See All India Quota and state quota.
- Count seats before you fill choices. A college with few seats in your category fills early. It helps when you build your choice filling list.
- Do not read it as a cut-off. For closing ranks, use the round-wise allotment PDFs on mcc.nic.in or tnmedicalselection.net. No closing ranks are given here, and coaching-site tables are not official.
The government college score guide explains how to set a target responsibly.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find the MCC seat matrix?
Look on mcc.nic.in under the counselling you are joining. Tamil Nadu's is annexed to its prospectus.
Do seat numbers change during counselling?
They can. Seats vacated by candidates who do not join are re-offered in later rounds, and the matrix is called tentative for that reason.
