What is the community reservation in Tamil Nadu MBBS?
On this page
For Tamil Nadu state quota MBBS seats, 69% of seats are reserved by community and 31% are open competition. The reserved share is BC 30%, MBC/DNC 20%, SC 18% and ST 1%. The figures below are from the Selection Committee's 2026-27 prospectus.
The community compartments
| Category | Share |
|---|---|
| Open Competition (OC) | 31% |
| Backward Class (BC), including BC Muslims | 30% |
| Most Backward Class / Denotified Communities (MBC/DNC) | 20% |
| Scheduled Caste (SC), including Arunthathiyars | 18% |
| Scheduled Tribe (ST) | 1% |
The BC share includes 3.5% for BC Muslims (BCM), so ordinary BC is 26.5%. The SC share includes the Arunthathiyar sub-quota (SCA): 16% of the SC quota is set aside for Arunthathiyars under Tamil Nadu Act No. 4 of 2009. Many sources write this as SC 15% and SCA 3%; the prospectus itself says SC 18% with the sub-quota inside it.
Unfilled SCA seats go to other SC candidates, and the other way round, under G.O.(Ms) No. 55 of 8 April 2010.
Reserved candidates can win open seats
Candidates in BC, BCM, MBC/DNC, SC, SCA and ST categories can also be selected for Open Competition seats on their rank. A high-ranking BC candidate therefore does not use a BC seat if the rank is good enough for OC. That is why the open and reserved lists should be read together.
Quotas that cut across communities
Some reservations are horizontal; seats are taken from within each community compartment:
- 7.5% for government school students (Act No. 34 of 2020); see the 7.5% quota.
- 5% for persons with disability in all institutions.
- Children of ex-servicemen: 10 MBBS seats and 1 BDS seat.
- Eminent sportspersons: 13 MBBS seats and 2 BDS seats.
Rules to remember
- Reservation applies on a Tamil Nadu community certificate. Community certificates from other states, for the candidate or a parent, are not accepted for reservation.
- OCI and PIO candidates are open-category only.
- The 69% rule applies to the state quota. All India Quota seats follow central reservation, which differs (see the All India Quota).
For how these numbers translate into rank lists and rounds, read the Tamil Nadu NEET counselling guide. Seat numbers are in how many MBBS seats Tamil Nadu has.
