What happens after the NEET result?
On this page
After the NEET-UG result you check whether you qualified, then register for counselling: MCC for the All India Quota and central institutions, and your state's authority for state seats. You fill and lock choices, get a seat allotment, and report to the college with your documents. The result alone does not give you a seat.
Step 1: read your scorecard
NTA's scorecard shows your marks, All India Rank, category rank and percentile. Check it against the qualifying percentile for your category (50th for General and EWS, 40th for SC, ST and OBC, 45th for General-PwBD). Qualifying makes you eligible for counselling; it does not decide the seat.
Step 2: know which counselling covers which seat
| Counselling | Seats it fills |
|---|---|
| MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) | 15% All India Quota seats in state government colleges, deemed universities, central universities and institutions, AIIMS, JIPMER, ESIC colleges |
| State authority (Tamil Nadu Selection Committee) | State quota seats in government colleges, and seats in private colleges other than deemed universities |
You can take part in both. See what the All India Quota is and who runs Tamil Nadu counselling.
Step 3: the counselling cycle
At both levels, the pattern is similar:
- Online registration and fee payment.
- Choice filling, then choice locking. In Tamil Nadu, choices cannot be changed after locking.
- Seat allotment.
- Report to the college with original documents.
- Further rounds: Round 1, Round 2, Round 3 and a stray vacancy round.
Joining rules matter. In Tamil Nadu, Round 1 and Round 2 allow a free exit before the stipulated date, but not joining in Round 3 or later forfeits the deposit.
Step 4: documents
Gather the NEET admit card, Class 10, 11 and 12 mark sheets, transfer certificate, proof of study, community and nativity certificates (Tamil Nadu), and special-category forms where they apply. Get certificates issued before the counselling window opens.
A note from 2026
Tamil Nadu opened its 2026-27 application on 29 June 2026, before the NEET result on 16 July, and later said there was no need to upload the NEET scorecard. Registration timing can therefore start before the result, so follow the Selection Committee's and MCC's notices rather than waiting for the result day. MCC's 2026 round dates came from secondary sources and change often, so confirm on mcc.nic.in.
