How many attempts are allowed in NEET?
On this page
Recent NEET-UG bulletins have not capped the number of attempts, as widely reported, so a repeat year is possible. This page could not check that against the 2026 bulletin text, so read the eligibility clause of the NEET 2027 bulletin before you plan more than one drop year.
What "no cap" does and does not mean
Every attempt is a fresh cycle. Each year you:
- register again on the NTA portal and pay that year's fee;
- need to meet that year's age rule (17 on or before 31 December of the admission year);
- are ranked on that year's score alone, and clear that year's qualifying percentile.
Nothing from an earlier attempt carries over: not marks, not rank. What you keep is knowledge.
Is the 2026 re-exam an extra attempt?
It was a replacement, not a separate cycle. The exam of 3 May 2026 was cancelled after a paper leak, and the re-examination on 21 June 2026 took its place. NTA's FAQ said there was no extra fee and that the fee paid for the original exam would be refunded; candidates did not have to register afresh.
Only one NEET per cycle
Do not plan around a second sitting within the same admission year. There is one valid exam per cycle; the 2026 re-examination was a replacement for a cancelled exam, not an extra chance. See is NEET held twice a year.
Planning a repeat year
An unlimited number of attempts is not the same as an unlimited number of good attempts. If you are considering a second year, diagnose the last attempt first: which subject cost you the most marks, and how many marks went on wrong answers rather than blanks. The NEET dropper strategy guide sets out a ten-month plan. Eligibility checks that apply each year, including the Class 12 marks rule, are on NEET eligibility.
PrepMatic's free assessment, about 15 untimed questions, shows your weakest subjects, which is a quick way to pick a starting point before you commit a year.

The number-of-attempts clause, if any, is in the NEET (UG) information bulletin published by NTA at neet.nta.nic.in. NTA's FAQs on the 2026 re-examination are at nta.ac.in. Always confirm in the latest bulletin.
