In which languages is NEET held?
On this page
NEET-UG is held in 13 languages: English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. English, Hindi and Urdu are available at all centres, while a regional language is available only at centres in its own state. The language you choose in the application cannot be changed later.
Which languages are offered where
| Language | Where it is offered |
|---|---|
| English | All centres |
| Hindi | All centres |
| Urdu | All centres |
| Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Telugu | Centres in the matching state, as mapped in the bulletin |
| Tamil | Centres in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry |
The medium-to-state mapping is set out in the information bulletin (Para 6 (ix) of Chapter 4 in the 2026 edition, as cited in NTA's FAQ). If you plan to choose a regional language, check that your preferred city is in a state where it is offered before you submit the form.
The bilingual booklet
If you pick a language other than English, your test booklet carries both your chosen language and English. When the two versions differ, the English version is final. English-medium candidates get an English booklet; Hindi candidates get Hindi and English, and so on.
Your choice is locked
The medium chosen at application cannot be changed afterwards. In 2026 it could not be changed even for the re-examination held on 21 June, which means there is no safety valve after you see your centre. Decide before you submit the form, not after.
How to choose
- Pick the language in which you read a five-line question fastest.
- Practise full mocks in that language, so the vocabulary does not slow you down.
- Keep the English wording within reach for technical terms, because it is final in any dispute.
The Tamil option is covered in can I write NEET in Tamil, and resources for Tamil-medium students are in NEET preparation in Tamil. The paper's structure is the same in every language; see NEET exam pattern.
