Can NRI and OCI students write NEET?
On this page
Yes. NEET-UG is open to Indian citizens, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) and foreign nationals, subject to the same age and Class 12 requirements as everyone else. What differs is how they are treated in counselling, and that depends on the seat quota.
Who can apply
NTA's bulletin allows all of these groups to apply, as widely reported. The conditions that apply to everyone, including minimum age (17 by 31 December of the admission year) and the Class 12 subjects and marks, are explained in the NEET age limit and Class 12 marks needed.
OCI and PIO in Tamil Nadu's state quota
The Tamil Nadu prospectus for 2026-27 says OCI and PIO candidates are eligible for the state quota, but only in the open category, with no reservation. This follows a Supreme Court order of 3 February 2023 (W.P. 891/2021), which the prospectus cites. So an OCI candidate competes for open-category seats on merit and cannot claim BC, MBC, SC or ST reservation in Tamil Nadu.
NRI quota in self-financing colleges
In Tamil Nadu's self-financing and state private university colleges, the prospectus divides seats into Government Quota (50% or more), Management Quota (35% or less) and NRI quota (15% of self-financing seats). The conditions for NRI-quota seats, including fees and documents, are set out in the prospectus, so read them in the current edition rather than relying on a summary.
All India Quota
The All India Quota seats are counselled by MCC. MCC's rules for NRI, OCI and foreign candidates are published in its information bulletin, and we have not verified them here. Open mcc.nic.in for your year's rules rather than relying on a summary.
Practical steps for a candidate abroad
- Read the NEET bulletin's section on candidates outside India for centre options and fees.
- Check your Class 12 board and subjects against the eligibility rule early.
- Decide which counselling you will use (MCC, a state, or both) and read the nativity or residence conditions for each.
