How much Class 12 marks are needed for NEET?
On this page
You need at least 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Biotechnology) taken together in Class 12 if you are in the General category. The minimum is 45% for General-PwBD candidates and 40% for SC, ST and OBC candidates, including those with a disability. You must also have passed English.
The rule by category
| Category | Minimum aggregate in Class 12 PCB |
|---|---|
| General | 50% |
| General-PwBD | 45% |
| SC, ST and OBC | 40% |
| SC, ST and OBC with disability | 40% |
The rule comes from the Graduate Medical Education Regulations (GMER) 1997 as amended in 2018, and the Tamil Nadu 2026-27 prospectus quotes it.
What "taken together" means
It is an aggregate across the three subjects, not 50% in each. For a General candidate:
- Physics 62, Chemistry 58, Biology 70 out of 100 each gives 190 out of 300, or 63.3%. That meets the 50% rule.
- Physics 44, Chemistry 52, Biology 57 gives 153 out of 300, or 51%. That also meets it, even though one subject is below 50.
Separately, you must have passed each of Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English individually. Biology or Biotechnology counts even if it was taken as an additional subject.
Two different tests
This Class 12 rule is not the NEET qualifying percentile. You need both: the percentile (50th, 45th or 40th depending on category) in NEET itself, and the Class 12 aggregate. The first is explained in the qualifying percentile in NEET.
Boards and certificates
For Tamil Nadu counselling, candidates from boards other than State, CBSE and ICSE need an Eligibility Certificate from the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University. If you are from a State Board, the conditions are the same as for any other student; see can State Board students crack NEET.
If you are still studying in Class 12 in the year you sit NEET, read the bulletin's clause for candidates whose Class 12 result is pending. This page has not verified that clause, so do not rely on forum posts for it.
The remaining conditions, including age, are on the NEET eligibility page.
Official source
The eligibility conditions are in the NEET (UG) information bulletin at neet.nta.nic.in. The Tamil Nadu prospectus for 2026-27 that quotes the GMER rule is on tnmedicalselection.net. Check the current bulletin.
