Can State Board students crack NEET?
On this page
Yes. NEET-UG is not set by any school board. Every candidate, whether from the Tamil Nadu State Board, CBSE or ICSE, writes the same paper on the same syllabus, which the National Medical Commission (NMC) says is aligned with NCERT Class 11 and Class 12. Where you studied decides your starting point, not your ceiling.
Why the board does not decide the result
The NEET syllabus is a list of units in Physics, Chemistry and Biology issued by NMC. It is not a list of State Board chapters or CBSE chapters. Your Class 12 board certificate only needs to meet the eligibility rule: you must have passed Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English, and scored the minimum aggregate in PCB. See how much Class 12 marks are needed.
In Tamil Nadu's counselling, the 2026-27 prospectus asks for an Eligibility Certificate from the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University only from candidates of boards other than State, CBSE and ICSE.
What a State Board student should actually do
The practical gap is not that one board is better; your school textbook and the NMC unit list may simply not match chapter for chapter. Close it in three steps:
- Open the NMC unit list (Physics 20 units, Chemistry 20, Biology 10) on the NEET syllabus page.
- Mark each unit against the chapter in your textbook that covers it, and note the units where the textbook is thin or missing.
- Read the matching NCERT chapter for each unit you marked, then test yourself on it.
Do this before you start full mocks, because a low score caused by an unread unit says little about your ability.
Language and government-school advantages
If you studied in Tamil medium, you can write NEET in Tamil at a centre in Tamil Nadu or Puducherry (details). And if you studied in a Tamil Nadu State Government school from Class 6 to 12, the 7.5% preferential reservation for MBBS and BDS may apply to you; see what the 7.5% quota is.
The honest limit of this answer
We do not have official board-wise NEET result data, so we cannot say how many State Board students qualify and will not invent a figure. What we can say is that the paper and syllabus are the same for everyone, and the qualifying percentile depends on your category, not your board. The NCERT for NEET guide shows how to read the book the syllabus is aligned with.
