How many MBBS seats are there in Tamil Nadu government colleges?
On this page
Tamil Nadu has 36 government medical colleges with about 5,050 MBBS seats in the 2026-27 session, according to the tentative seat matrix in the Selection Committee's prospectus. Of these, 753 go to the All India Quota (counselled by MCC) and 4,247 are state quota seats. Another 50 are ward-quota seats.
The seat split, 2026-27
| Group | MBBS seats |
|---|---|
| All India Quota (15%, through MCC) | 753 |
| State quota (85%, through the Tamil Nadu Selection Committee) | 4,247 |
| Ward-quota seats | 50 |
| Total in 36 government medical colleges | 5,050 |
The 50 ward seats are 20 at the ESIC college in Coimbatore, for wards of insured persons, and 30 at Perundurai, Erode, for wards of transport-corporation employees. The number is described as tentative, so the final count can differ after approvals.
Other seats in the same prospectus
- ESIC Medical College, K.K. Nagar, Chennai: 149 seats, of which 97 are state quota.
- Government dental colleges: 250 BDS seats, of which 37 are All India Quota and 213 are state quota.
These are separate from the 5,050 figure, which covers only the 36 government medical colleges. Seats in private and self-financing colleges are not part of this count.
How the seats are filled
State quota seats are filled by the Tamil Nadu Selection Committee on NEET score, within the community reservation. A slice of the state quota, 7.5%, goes preferentially to government school students (what the 7.5% quota is). The All India Quota seats are filled by MCC counselling (the 15% All India Quota).
A seat count is not a cut-off
More seats do not tell you how high your rank must be. Closing ranks differ by quota, category and round, and we give none here because they must come from the official allotment lists. See NEET score for a government medical college for how to set a target responsibly.
The numbers change from year to year and from the tentative matrix to the final one, so use them as the 2026-27 picture, not a promise for 2027.
