NCERT is the foundation, not a guarantee. The National Medical Commission says the NEET-UG syllabus is aligned with NCERT Class 11 and Class 12, so those books are where every unit starts. Whether they are enough for you depends on how you score on questions in NEET style, and you can test that yourself instead of guessing.

What we can say and what we cannot

We can say that the syllabus is a list of units issued by NMC, aligned with NCERT. We cannot give you a figure for how many questions in a given paper came straight from NCERT, because no official breakdown exists that we could verify, and any "X% from NCERT" claim you read elsewhere is an estimate.

A four-step check

  1. Finish one careful pass of NCERT for a subject, including diagrams, tables and summaries.
  2. Take a timed test on those chapters, or a full-length mock.
  3. Sort every wrong answer into one of three bins: the idea is in NCERT but you forgot it; the idea is in NCERT but you could not apply it to a numerical or a statement-type question; the idea is not in NCERT at all.
  4. Act on the bin that is biggest. Forgetting means revision. Application means more practice questions. A large "not in NCERT" bin is the only case where you need another book for that topic.

Your own log, not a rumour from a forum, tells you which bin is biggest. Keep it for at least three tests before you draw a conclusion.

Subject differences

  • Biology: NCERT is the core text, so line-by-line reading and repeated revision matter most.
  • Chemistry: NCERT covers the theory, but numerical problems in physical chemistry and organic reaction practice need questions beyond the text.
  • Physics: reading concepts is not enough; the speed comes from solving numericals.

Watch out for out-of-date extra material

The NMC syllabus in use since NEET 2024 dropped several chemistry topics that older books still contain, such as Solid State, Surface Chemistry and Polymers. If a reference book or old notes spend many pages on topics that are not in the current unit list, check the NEET syllabus before you invest time.

To plan the reading itself, see NCERT for NEET, and use NEET mock tests for the analysis step.

PrepMatic's topic tests and mocks are AI-generated practice, and the result shows which subject cost you the most marks.
