Is NEET held twice a year?
On this page
No. NEET-UG has one valid exam in each admission cycle, and a single score is used for counselling that year. NEET 2026 did have two sittings, on 3 May and 21 June, but only because the first was cancelled; the re-exam replaced it and was not an extra chance.
What the recent cycles looked like
| Cycle | Exam | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | One exam, held 4 May 2025 | 14 June 2025 |
| 2026 | 3 May exam cancelled; re-exam on 21 June 2026 | 16 July 2026 |
In 2026, candidates did not choose which sitting to count. The cancelled exam had no result. The re-exam took its place without an extra fee or a fresh registration. Read why NEET 2026 was re-conducted for the full account.
What about NEET 2027 and computer-based testing?
The Education Minister has announced that NEET-UG will be a computer-based test from 2027. News reports describe a multi-day exam with several shifts and score normalisation. If that happens, those shifts would be parts of a single exam, with candidates assigned to one of them, rather than two separate attempts. That is unconfirmed until NTA publishes the 2027 bulletin, so check whether NEET 2027 is computer-based for what has actually been announced.
How to plan with one exam a year
- Treat the exam date as final. Plan for one chance in the year, with full mocks scheduled in the last three months.
- Do not count on a "second attempt in the same year" if you fall ill or your preparation slips.
- If you miss a cycle, the next opportunity is the following year's NEET. Whether there is a cap on how many times you may appear is a separate question; see how many attempts are allowed in NEET.
A repeat year is common enough to have its own plan: the NEET dropper strategy covers a ten-month approach.

Dates for each cycle are announced in the NEET (UG) information bulletin and the notices on neet.nta.nic.in and nta.ac.in. Confirm in the latest bulletin.
