பொருட்பால்: the Book of Wealth and Polity

70 chapters · kurals 381 to 1080

பொருட்பால் is the longest part of the Thirukkural: 70 chapters, kurals 381 to 1,080. It is Thiruvalluvar's guide to statecraft and public life, which is why it is so often compared with classical works on politics.

It begins with அரசியல், 25 chapters on the qualities of a ruler, such as learning, listening, justice and the avoidance of tyranny. அமைச்சியல் turns to ministers and counsel, then short groups cover fortresses, wealth and the army. நட்பியல் (17 chapters) examines friendship, true and false, and குடியியல் closes with the conduct of citizens, from honour and dignity to farming (உழவு) and the shame of begging.

TNPSC's syllabus asks about the relevance of Thirukkural to socio-political and economic affairs, and பொருட்பால் is the source of most of that material. Chapters such as செங்கோன்மை (the right sceptre), கொடுங்கோன்மை (tyranny) and உழவு (farming) are the ones most often linked to questions on governance and the economy. Read them alongside the polity and economy units of the syllabus.
