இடுக்கண் அழியாமை: Hopefulness in Trouble

Chapter 63 of 133 (Itukkan Azhiyaamai) · Wealth · Royalty · Kurals 621 to 630

About this chapter

இடுக்கண் அழியாமை, hopefulness in trouble, is about meeting hardship without being broken by it. The chapter gives a resilient, even cheerful, attitude to suffering, based on the view that trouble is part of having a body.

Kural 621 gives the opening advice: laugh when troubles come, since nothing presses down sorrow better. Kural 622 says that a flood of troubles is overcome by the wise as soon as their minds think calmly about it. Kural 623 uses a play on words, saying that those who do not grieve in grief make grief itself grieve. Kural 624 compares a person to a bullock that pushes through every difficult stretch, and Kural 625 says that troubles come to an end for one who is not broken even when they pile up. Kural 626 says those who never clung to wealth will not cry out when it is gone. Kural 627 explains why the great do not take trouble hard: the body is a target for it. Kural 628 and Kural 629 say sorrow cannot touch someone who does not crave pleasure. Kural 630 ends with a bold claim, that one who treats pain as pleasure wins a standing even his enemies will envy.

Kural 621 and Kural 627 are the two to know, as they state the chapter's attitude most simply.

For the syllabus, the chapter fits universal values, such as resilience and equanimity.
