ஆள்வினை உடைமை, manly effort, is about sustained, determined effort in carrying out any task. It is part of a run of chapters on perseverance, and its last kurals reply to the chapter on fate.
Kural 611 says not to give in to the thought that a task is too hard, since effort itself brings strength. Kural 612 advises never to leave work half done, for the world abandons those who do. Kural 613 and Kural 614 link effort to generosity: the pride of helping others rests on the dignity of hard work, and generosity without effort fails like a weapon in unfit hands. Kural 615 says one who loves work more than pleasure becomes a pillar for his kin. Kural 616 gives a short rule, that effort produces wealth and its lack brings poverty. Kural 617 says Mudevi, goddess of misfortune, lives with the idle, and Lakshmi with the industrious. Kural 618 separates bad luck from blame, since adverse fate is no disgrace, but not making effort is. Kurals 619 and 620 answer Chapter 38: effort pays its reward even if fate says no, and those who strive without fear or fainting will leave fate behind.
Kural 620 is the one to learn, and Kural 616 is the shortest statement of the theme.
