Thirukkural (திருக்குறள்) is tested in two different ways in TNPSC exams. In General Studies, the syllabus lists six aspects of the book, such as its secular character and its universal values. In the Tamil section of Group 4, you answer questions on the content of specific chapters. Both are small, closed topics that you can finish in a few weeks, and few other topics give you such reliable marks for the time they take.

Where Thirukkural is examined

Exam and sectionWhat is askedWhere it sits
Group 4 Part B, General StudiesThe six aspects of ThirukkuralUnit VI, History, Culture, Heritage and Socio-Political Movements of Tamil Nadu (20 questions indicative)
Group 2 and 2A prelims, Part BThe same six aspectsUnit VI of the General Studies part, which also lists the Justice Party, the Self-Respect Movement, the Dravidian Movement and the contributions of Periyar and Anna
Group 4 Part A, TamilMessages, quotations and completing a line from 25 listed chaptersLiterature part of the Tamil syllabus (January 2022 scheme)
Group 2 and 2A mains, Paper IAn essay on Thirukkural themes, in the Tamil Eligibility TestDescriptive, qualifying paper

The unit is numbered VI in the current Group 4 and Group 2 prelims schemes. Older ten-unit syllabus lists call it Unit VIII, which is where many books and videos still point. The Group 4 Tamil paper is covered in the General Tamil guide, and the rest of Unit VI is in Tamil Nadu history, culture and heritage.

The six aspects, as the syllabus words them

The Group 4 and Group 2 prelims syllabus lists Thirukkural as: "Significance as a Secular Literature – Relevance to everyday life – Impact of Thirukkural on Humanity – Thirukkural and Universal Values – Relevance to Socio-politico-economic affairs – Philosophical content in Thirukkural". Here is what to learn under each heading.

Syllabus aspectWhat to be able to say
Significance as a Secular LiteratureThe teachings are addressed to all people and are not tied to one religion, caste or country. This is why it has titles such as பொதுமறை (the common scripture).
Relevance to everyday lifeConduct in the home and in society: love, hospitality, pleasant speech, gratitude, learning, friendship, truthfulness.
Impact of Thirukkural on HumanityIt has been translated into many languages. Early translators include Veeramamunivar (into Latin) and G. U. Pope (into English, 1886).
Thirukkural and Universal ValuesEquality, humanism, non-violence, truthfulness and compassion. Kural 972 on equality is the standard example.
Relevance to Socio-politico-economic affairsThe Porul section: governance, the duties of a ruler, wealth, agriculture and the army.
Philosophical contentVirtue (அறம்) as the basis of life, fate (ஊழ்), impermanence, renunciation and knowledge of the truth.

Questions on the six aspects are usually statement-based ("which of the following is correct about Thirukkural?"), so what matters is clear, textbook-level understanding, not memorised essays.

The structure to memorise

The book has 1,330 kurals in 133 chapters (அதிகாரம்) of 10 kurals each. Each kural is a two-line verse in the குறள் வெண்பா form. It is divided into three sections called பால், which is why it is also known as முப்பால்.

Section (பால்)MeaningChaptersKuralsSub-divisions (இயல்)
அறத்துப்பால்Virtue38 (chapters 1 to 38)1 to 380பாயிரவியல் 4, இல்லறவியல் 20, துறவறவியல் 13, ஊழியல் 1
பொருட்பால்Wealth and polity70 (chapters 39 to 108)381 to 1080அரசியல் 25, அங்கவியல் 32, ஒழிபியல் 13
காமத்துப்பால் (இன்பத்துப்பால்)Love25 (chapters 109 to 133)1081 to 1330களவியல் 7, கற்பியல் 18

A useful memory aid: the Thiruvalluvar statue at Kanyakumari is 133 feet tall, one foot for each chapter. Its 38-foot pedestal stands for the 38 chapters of Aram, and the 95-foot figure for the 70 chapters of Porul plus the 25 of Inbam (70 plus 25 is 95).

Other facts that appear in questions:

  • Author and titles: Thiruvalluvar. Alternative names for the work include முப்பால், தமிழ்மறை, பொதுமறை, பொய்யாமொழி and தெய்வநூல். Little is certain about his life, so follow the account in your Samacheer textbook.
  • Group of works: Thirukkural belongs to the Eighteen Lesser Works (பதினெண்கீழ்க்கணக்கு), a collection made up mostly of ethical works. Scholars debate its exact date, so use the period your textbook gives.
  • Commentators: Ten classical commentators are traditionally listed: Dharumar, Manakkudavar, Dhamathar, Nachchar, Parimelazhagar, Parithi, Thirumalaiyar, Mallar, Parippperumal and Kaalingar. Parimelazhagar is the best known.
  • Thiruvalluvar era: the Tamil Nadu Government uses the Thiruvalluvar year, which is the Gregorian year plus 31. Valluvar Kottam in Chennai and the Kanyakumari statue are the commemorative landmarks.

The 25 chapters in the Group 4 Tamil syllabus

The January 2022 Group 4 scheme lists the chapters you must know, using short names such as "அன்பு" and "அடக்கம்". The tables give the standard chapter title and number for each, matched by me to the short name. Check the matching against your textbook edition. The notification you are applying under may reorganise the Tamil units, so confirm in Annexure III of the latest Group 4 notification.

No chapter from காமத்துப்பால் is on the list, so for the Tamil questions it is the lowest priority.

A study plan that works

  1. Learn the skeleton first (one evening). Memorise the three பால் with their chapter and kural ranges and the statue numbers above. This answers most structure questions straight away.
  2. One chapter a day for 25 days. Read the ten kurals with their meaning from the Samacheer Kalvi Tamil books, write a one-line theme, and memorise the two or three kurals your textbook quotes. Questions usually draw on those.
  3. Link each chapter to an aspect. Write the chapter next to the syllabus heading it illustrates, for example ஒப்புரவறிதல் under everyday life, உழவு under economic affairs, and பெருமை (Kural 972) under universal values. This is what prepares you for the General Studies questions.
  4. Revise in loops. Revisit each chapter after 3 days, 10 days and 30 days. Say the kurals aloud, since they are written to be recited.
  5. Test the "complete the line" format. Cover the second line of a kural and write it out. Check spelling, because the options in the exam often differ by a single letter.

Here are five questions to test yourself. The answers follow the facts above.

  1. How many chapters and kurals are there? 133 chapters and 1,330 kurals.
  2. Which section has the most chapters? Porul, with 70.
  3. In which chapter is Kural 972? பெருமை, chapter 98, in Porul.
  4. What do the 133 feet of the Kanyakumari statue stand for? The 133 chapters.
  5. Which name means "the book of three parts"? முப்பால்.

Thirukkural overlaps with other Tamil Nadu topics. The social-justice message links to the development administration unit, and the same Unit VI covers Sangam literature and reformers. Plan all of it together using the Group 4 syllabus page.

Frequently asked questions

How much of the TNPSC paper is from Thirukkural?

There is no fixed number. The six aspects sit inside a 20-question General Studies unit on Tamil Nadu history and culture, and the Group 4 Tamil part can add a few questions on specific chapters. TNPSC says unit-wise question counts are indicative, so prepare the whole topic rather than guessing a count.

Do I need to memorise all 1,330 kurals?

No. For Group 4, the Tamil syllabus lists 25 chapters, and the General Studies aspects are conceptual. Learn those 25 chapters well, plus the structure of the book.

Is Thirukkural asked in Group 2 and Group 1?

For Group 2 and 2A, the prelims list the same six aspects, and the mains Tamil Eligibility Test includes an essay built on Thirukkural themes. I have not verified the Group 1 syllabus, so check its prelims and mains syllabus PDFs.

Which books are best for Thirukkural?

Start with the Samacheer Kalvi Tamil textbooks, since TNPSC ties the literature unit to school textbooks up to SSLC. A commentary by Parimelazhagar or a modern simple-meaning edition helps if you want to go deeper.

Is the General Studies question different from the Tamil question?

Yes. General Studies asks about the book's character, values and relevance. The Tamil part asks about content: the message of a chapter, a quoted line or the next line of a kural.
