சான்றாண்மை: Perfectness

சான்றாண்மை, perfectness (the character of the சான்றோர், the complete and weighty person), asks what a fully formed good person looks like. The chapter lists qualities and then tests them against hard cases.
Kural 981 says that to those who take up this ideal, all good things become duties. Kural 982 says that the only wealth the perfect value is their goodness. Kural 983 names the five pillars: love (அன்பு), shame at wrongdoing (நாண்), beneficence (ஒப்புரவு), kindly regard (கண்ணோட்டம்) and truthfulness (வாய்மை). Kural 984 defines penance as not killing and perfection as not speaking of others' faults. Kurals 985 to 987 are the hard tests, in which humility is the strength of the mighty (Kural 985), the touchstone is to accept defeat even from lesser people (Kural 986), and perfection is worthless if it cannot do good even to those who have wronged it (Kural 987). Kural 988 adds that poverty is no disgrace to those who have this firmness, Kural 989 describes the perfect as the shore that does not change even when ages change, and Kural 990 says that the earth could not bear its burden if the perfect fell short.
Kural 983 is the one to learn, for its five-part list, and Kural 987 sets the highest standard.
