வரைவின் மகளிர்: Wanton Women

Chapter 92 of 133 (Varaivinmakalir) · Wealth · Friendship · Kurals 911 to 920

About this chapter

வரைவின் மகளிர், literally "women without restriction", is a warning against women who offer affection for money. It is addressed to a male reader and its language is harsh. The concern is deception and ruin: sweet words that are really aimed at a man's wealth.

Kural 911 says the sweet words of women who seek wealth rather than love bring sorrow. Kural 912 advises weighing the worth of those who size up a man's gain and then speak like good people, and keeping away. Kural 913 compares their false embrace to embracing a strange corpse in a dark room. Kurals 914 to 917 name the people who stay clear of them: the wise who seek the wealth of grace (அருள்), those of good sense, those who care for their own goodness, while only those without a steady mind are drawn to such a relationship. Kural 918 says that to people without discernment the embrace of deceitful women is like a demoness (அணங்கு), and Kural 919 calls it a hell into which the base are plunged. Kural 920 groups deceitful women with liquor and dice as the company of those whom fortune has left. That leads into the next two chapters, 93 on liquor and 94 on gambling.

Kural 912 is the most practical, as it asks the reader to look at motive before trust.

For exams, it is mainly useful as part of the Porutpaal's நட்பியல் section (chapters 79 to 95).
