வினைத்திட்பம்: Power in Action

Chapter 67 of 133 (Vinaiththitpam) · Wealth · Minister of State · Kurals 661 to 670

About this chapter

வினைத்திட்பம், power in action, is about firmness in carrying out a decision. It belongs to the chapters on ministers and places the strength of an undertaking in the mind that drives it.

Kural 661 gives the thesis, that firmness in action is firmness of mind and all other abilities come after. Kural 662 gives two rules: avoid an act that would ruin you, and do not be discouraged by a setback. Kural 663 advises that a plan be revealed only when it is complete, since announcing it early can cause irreparable harm. Kural 664 states plainly that it is easy for anyone to say how a thing should be done but very hard to do it as said. Kural 665 says firm action wins esteem, and Kural 666 that those who plan with firmness obtain what they wished. Kural 667 offers the image of the linch-pin in a large cart's wheel, saying no one should be despised for small size. Kural 668 advises carrying out a firmly resolved action without delay, and Kural 669 doing with firmness any act that leads to lasting good, even if painful at first. Kural 670 closes by saying the world does not value those who do not value firmness of action.

Kural 664 and Kural 667 are the two to learn, one for its honest plain statement and the other for the linch-pin.

For the syllabus, the chapter fits governance, since it deals with carrying out plans.
