பெரியாரைப் பிழையாமை: Not Offending the Great

Chapter 90 of 133 (Periyaaraip Pizhaiyaamai) · Wealth · Friendship · Kurals 891 to 900

About this chapter

பெரியாரைப் பிழையாமை, not offending the great, is a warning not to wrong those who hold power or moral authority. The great here are rulers, whose anger can be fatal, and the virtuous, whose displeasure is also dreaded.

Kural 891 sets the rule: the best protection is not to despise the strength of those who can do what they intend. Kural 892 says that living without regard for the great brings lasting trouble. Kurals 893 and 894 are blunt: those who wish for their own ruin should injure the mighty, and for the weak to do harm to the strong is like beckoning death with the hand. Kural 895 says those who have angered a fierce and mighty king will not thrive wherever they go, and Kural 896 gives the chapter's best image, in which a person might escape even a fire but not the anger of those he has offended. Kurals 897 to 900 widen the idea to the worthy. Wealth counts for nothing once they are angry (Kural 897), those who despise the hill-like are destroyed with their households (Kural 898), even kings fall when men of lofty vows are wrathful (Kural 899), and allies cannot save those who anger the noble (Kural 900).

Kural 896 and Kural 891 are the two to learn.

For the syllabus, it fits governance and universal values, as a lesson in respect for authority and for worth.
