காமத்துப்பால்: the Book of Love

25 chapters · kurals 1081 to 1330

காமத்துப்பால், also called இன்பத்துப்பால், is the third part of the Thirukkural: 25 chapters, kurals 1,081 to 1,330. It follows the Tamil literary tradition of அகம் (inner life), giving voice to lovers rather than to a narrator.

The part has two groups. களவியல் (7 chapters) covers love before marriage: first sight, recognising the signs of love and the gossip of the village. கற்பியல் (18 chapters) covers love within marriage: the pain of separation, longing, and the sulking and reconciliation of ஊடல் with which the whole work ends.

Because these chapters are poetry of feeling rather than instruction, read each one as a short scene: who is speaking, to whom, and in what situation. The chapter pages below show all 10 kurals together, which makes those scenes much easier to follow than reading kurals one at a time. Many readers find these the most beautiful chapters of the whole work, and the most moving.
