பொழுதுகண்டு இரங்கல்: Lamentations at Eventide
About this chapter
பொழுதுகண்டு இரங்கல், lamentations at eventide, is about the evening hour, which the wife (தலைவி) in her husband's absence cannot bear. She speaks to the evening itself and to herself, and her pain grows with the light.
Kural 1221 says that the hour is not evening but a spear that takes the lives of wives. Kural 1222 addresses the dim twilight, asking whether its companion is as hard-hearted as her own. Kural 1223 describes the evening as one that brings dimness and a growing sorrow, and Kural 1224 says it comes in the absence of her beloved like slayers on a battlefield. Kural 1225 contrasts morning and evening, asking what favour she did to the one and what enmity to the other. Kural 1226 says she did not know what evening could do until he left. Kural 1227 is the chapter's best-known image: the pain buds in the morning, opens through the day and blossoms in the evening. Kural 1228 hears in the shepherd's flute a weapon, because it announces the hour of fiery sorrow. Kural 1229 says the whole town is plunged in confusion as evening spreads, and Kural 1230 ends with her life fading in the dusk at the thought of him who, in Pope's reading, has gone seeking wealth.
Kural 1227 is the one to know first.
