கண் விதுப்பழிதல், eyes consumed with grief, has the wife (தலைவி) speaking of her own eyes. In her husband's absence, she blames them for the pain: they were the ones that looked at him, and now they cannot stop weeping or sleep.
Kural 1171 asks why the eyes weep when it was they who showed her the man, and Kural 1172 says that they looked without foresight and now suffer. Kural 1173 sees something comic in this, that the eyes that looked so eagerly now weep. Kurals 1174 and 1175 say her eyes are dry of tears, and endure sleeplessness in a sorrow larger than the sea. Kural 1176 is bitterly ironic: "Oh, how sweet" that the eyes which gave her this pain are themselves caught in it. Kural 1177 wishes that the eyes that gazed so tenderly at him may weep until their springs run dry. Kural 1178 admits that her eyes cannot be at peace without seeing him, even if, as the translations read it, his love is only in words. Kural 1179 sums up her state: her eyes cannot sleep when he is away and cannot sleep when he is there, so in both cases they suffer. Kural 1180 ends with a worry that eyes like beaten drums will let the town guess her secret.
Kural 1176 is the one to read slowly, for the way it turns blame into bitter humour.
