அவர்வயின் விதும்பல்: Mutual Desire

Chapter 127 of 133 (Avarvayinvidhumpal) · Love · The Post-marital love · Kurals 1261 to 1270

About this chapter

அவர்வயின் விதும்பல், eagerness for him (the title is rendered "Mutual Desire" in the translations), is about the wife's (தலைவி) longing for her husband's return and her impatience as the days pass. In the chapter her husband is away on the king's business.

Kural 1261 shows how long she has waited: her eyes are dim from watching and her fingers worn from marking off days on the wall. Kural 1262 is spoken to her confidante: if she forgot him even for a day, her bracelets would slip and her beauty fade. Kural 1263 says that he has gone with his courage for company, in search of victory, and she lives only on the hope of seeing him come back. Kurals 1264 to 1266 are full of anticipation. Her heart swells at the thought of his return (1264), she will look until her eyes are full and the pallor will go (1265), and she will drink in the joy of the day when he comes and all her pain ends (1266). Kural 1267 asks whether she will sulk, embrace or do both. Kural 1268 wishes the king victory, so that her husband may soon be home for the evening feast. Kural 1269 says one day seems like seven. In both translations Kural 1270 is the husband's voice, wondering what meeting could be worth if she had died of a broken heart.

Kural 1269 is the one to know, for how it measures waiting.
