குறிப்பறிதல்: Recognition of the Signs
About this chapter
குறிப்பறிதல், recognition of the signs, shares its title with chapter 71. There it is a minister's skill. Here it is about two lovers learning each other's feeling through glances. The speaker is the lover (தலைவன்), and the situation is the early stage of their love, when each is still looking and guessing, and glances do most of the talking.
Kural 1091 says her eyes have two looks, one that hurts and one that heals. Kural 1092 claims that a single stolen glance is more than half the joy of love. Kurals 1093 to 1095 are small scenes. She looks and then lowers her head, which waters the shoot of love (Kural 1093); when he looks she looks at the ground, and when he looks away she looks back with a faint smile (Kural 1094); she pretends not to look but smiles with a half-closed eye (Kural 1095). Kurals 1096 and 1097 observe that harsh words and hostile looks are often only a pretence of strangeness, and a sign of love. Kural 1098 returns to the gentle smile, and Kural 1099 notes that an ordinary glance as if to strangers is typical of lovers. Kural 1100 ends with the thought that when eyes agree with eyes, words are of no use.
Kural 1094 is the most vivid of the little scenes, and Kural 1100 the neatest summary.
