It is compulsory unless you are exempt. IBPS Clerk (Customer Service Associate) requires you to be proficient in the official language of the State or Union Territory you apply for, and you are exempt from the Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT) only if your Class 10 or higher mark-sheet shows that you studied that language.

What the notification requires

In CRP CSA-XVI (2026) you must be able to read, write, speak and understand the opted official language of the State or UT whose vacancies you apply for. For Tamil Nadu that language is Tamil.

Who is exempt

If your 10th standard or higher mark-sheet or certificate shows that you studied the language, you do not need to take the test. Without that proof, you take the LLPT.

When the test happens

The LLPT is not part of the Prelims or Mains. It is held after the Mains and the provisional allotment, but before you join. It is marks-based and qualifying: if you do not clear it, you are not appointed, however high your Mains score.

Choosing your state with this in mind

You apply for one State or Union Territory only, so the choice of state decides the language you must know. If you studied Tamil in Class 10 or 12, Tamil Nadu is the natural choice and the LLPT does not apply to you. Applying to a state whose language you have not studied means preparing for a proficiency test in addition to the exam. See applying in more than one state.

How other exams treat local language

  • SBI Junior Associate: also an LLPT, required only if you did not study the opted language in Class 10 or 12.
  • IBPS RRB Office Assistant and Officer Scale I: local language is an essential qualification, with no separate test described; see local language in IBPS RRB.
  • IBPS PO: no local-language test is described; it is an all-India cadre.
