Yes, for the sections other than English. The IBPS Clerk (Customer Service Associate) papers are set in English, Hindi and the regional language of the state you apply for. For Tamil Nadu that means English, Hindi and Tamil. The English Language section is in English only.

Medium by state in CRP CSA-XVI

State or UT appliedExam medium
Tamil NaduEnglish, Hindi, Tamil
PuducherryEnglish, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam

The state you apply for decides the languages offered. Because you can apply to only one State or UT, applying to Tamil Nadu is what gives you Tamil question papers; see applying in more than one state.

What stays in English

The English Language test is in English alone, in both the Prelims (30 questions) and the Mains (40 questions). If English is your weak area, plan for it in the IBPS Clerk preparation strategy.

Tamil in the exam and Tamil at joining

Tamil as the exam medium is not the same as the language requirement for the job. After the Mains you may have to take a Local Language Proficiency Test in Tamil before you join, unless your Class 10 or higher mark-sheet shows you studied it. See the local language test.

How other bank exams compare

  • IBPS PO: Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, General Awareness and Data Analysis questions are in English and Hindi, not Tamil. The English section is in English.
  • IBPS RRB Office Assistant and Officer Scale I: English, Hindi and the state's regional language, so Tamil for Tamil Nadu.
  • SBI Junior Associate: English, Hindi and the state language; for Tamil Nadu, Tamil is offered.
  • SBI PO: the 2026 advertisement text we reviewed did not confirm the medium, so check the advertisement.

How to use this

Pick the language you read fastest in and practise in that language, so that reading the question never eats into your timed sections. The English section is the same whichever language you choose. The IBPS Clerk syllabus and exam pattern lists each section.
