Can I apply for IBPS Clerk in more than one state?
On this page
No. In IBPS Clerk (Customer Service Associate), you can apply for vacancies in only one State or Union Territory. The same one-state rule applies to the SBI Junior Associate (clerk) recruitment.
What the notifications say
- IBPS CSA-XVI (2026): recruitment is State or UT-wise, and a candidate applies for the vacancies of one State or UT only.
- SBI Junior Associate (2026): you apply for one State or UT only, and a candidate can appear for the test only once under that recruitment project. There is also no inter-circle or inter-state transfer before 5 years of service.
So the state you choose at the time of application is, in practice, the state you will work in for years.
What the choice affects
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Vacancies | Recruitment is State or UT-wise, so the vacancies you compete for are those of your chosen state |
| Language | You must be proficient in the state's official language; see the local language test |
| Exam medium | The papers are offered in English, Hindi and the state's regional language; see IBPS Clerk in Tamil |
| Posting | Your appointment is in that state |
How to choose
- Start with language. If your Class 10 or higher mark-sheet shows you studied the state's language, you are exempt from the language test. For most Tamil Nadu candidates, that points to Tamil Nadu.
- Then consider where you are willing to live. For SBI, the no-transfer-for-5-years rule makes this a serious decision.
- Do not choose by vacancy count alone. Vacancy numbers are revised by corrigendum after release (IBPS issued one for CSA-XVI on 29 September 2026), and they tell you nothing about how many applicants you will face.
Can I apply to IBPS and SBI both?
They are separate recruitments with separate applications. Each has its own state choice, fee, exam dates and rules, so the one-state limit applies inside each recruitment, not across both. Check each notification for its own conditions. The difference in their Mains papers is in IBPS vs SBI.
