GATE virtual calculator
On this page
The GATE virtual calculator is an on-screen scientific calculator, and it is the only calculator you can use in the GATE exam. Physical calculators, mobile phones and watches are not allowed, and bringing them can lead to disqualification. The calculator opens inside the test interface on the exam computer.
The rules in short
| Item | Rule for GATE 2027 |
|---|---|
| Calculator | Only the on-screen virtual scientific calculator |
| Physical calculator, phone, watch | Not allowed; disqualification |
| Scribble pad | One at a time |
These come from the official FAQs and the information brochure for GATE 2027.
Why practice matters
A calculator you are slow with costs you time on NAT and numerical MCQ questions. The virtual one is not the one on your desk, so get used to it. Spend a few sessions on it before the exam:
- Use the official mock test on the GATE website. The GATE 2026 site linked mock tests, and you should check the GATE 2027 site for the current ones.
- Do a few timed papers with the on-screen calculator only. Avoid switching to a handheld one at home.
- Learn the functions your paper needs, such as powers, roots, logarithms, exponentials and trigonometric functions, and check the angle mode (degrees or radians) before a trigonometric calculation.
The calculator speeds up arithmetic but does not replace method, so set up the solution first and use it for the final step.
Where it helps most
It is most useful on NAT questions, where the number you key in must be accurate, and on 2-mark numerical MCQs. For MSQs the real work is concept checking. See the exam pattern guide for the mix of question types, and previous year papers for how to practise.
Frequently asked questions
Can I carry my own scientific calculator into the GATE exam?
No. Only the virtual calculator is allowed, and a physical calculator can lead to disqualification.
Does GATE provide rough paper?
Yes, one scribble pad at a time is provided, as the official rules state.
