GATE XE paper: Engineering Sciences
On this page
XE is GATE's Engineering Sciences paper. You answer General Aptitude, a compulsory Engineering Mathematics section, and any two optional sections from nine. In GATE 2027 the optional sections are numbered XE1 to XE9, and the textile paper (TF) has been folded into XE as XE9. The total paper count stays at 30.

Code letters have been replaced by numbers. A page that still lists XE-A to XE-I, or TF as its own paper, is out of date for GATE 2027. All 2027 syllabi were also revised, so use the current syllabus, not a 2021 to 2026 topic list.
Who takes XE, and with what
XE suits you if two of its sections match your degree, for example Fluid Mechanics with Thermodynamics. Institutes decide which papers they accept, so check your target's list before you choose. As a second paper, XE is allowed with AE, CE, CH, CY, DA, ME, MT, NM, PH and PI as the primary, as the two-paper combinations page shows. ME with XE is one of the popular pairs.
Preparation notes
- Decide your two sections early, even though you pick them in the exam, because 70 of the 100 marks sit there.
- Master XE0 maths, since it is compulsory for everyone.
- Use the official 2027 syllabus and the engineering mathematics guide.
- The exam pattern guide lists every paper's marks split.
Frequently asked questions
Is Textile Engineering still a separate GATE paper?
No. From 2027 it is section XE9 inside XE.
Do I choose XE sections at the time of registration?
No. You choose the two optional sections during the exam.
