PSU recruitment through GATE
On this page
PSU recruitment through GATE means that a public sector undertaking uses your GATE score in the relevant paper to shortlist engineers for trainee posts, instead of holding its own written test. Each PSU publishes its own advert with its own eligibility and selection process. GATE has no age limit, but PSUs set one, and a qualified score does not guarantee a job.
How the process works
- A PSU announces posts and the GATE papers it accepts. Some do this before the exam. POWERGRID's advert for GATE 2027 came out on 24 September 2026.
- You apply as the advert directs.
- The PSU shortlists on GATE score. Many add a group discussion or interview, and a minimum percentage in the degree.
The verified example: POWERGRID Engineer Trainee 2027
From Advt. No. CC/03/2026 dated 24 September 2026:

| Degree marks | At least 60%; final-year students can apply if results are out by 31.08.2027 |
| Pay | Training basic Rs.40,000 (IDA scale Rs.40,000 to 1,40,000); approximate CTC Rs.11.00 lakh in training and Rs.22.50 lakh after absorption at E2 |

These pay figures are POWERGRID's own, for this advert only, not the pay of other PSUs.
Other recruiters
For GATE 2026, EIL, NHAI, GAIL, OPTCL, NHIDCL, NPCIL and POWERGRID announced recruitment on the GATE site, and the Cabinet Secretariat recruits Group-A officers on GATE score. The brochure lists many more PSUs that used GATE in past years, but that does not show anyone is recruiting this year. For GATE 2027, POWERGRID is the only advert we verified as of 9 October 2026, so rely on each PSU's own notice.
What this means for your preparation
Check a PSU's age limit and degree percentage before you pick a paper. Your qualifying marks are only the first hurdle, and a higher GATE score helps with shortlisting. The after GATE guide compares PSU jobs with M.Tech, and the eligibility guide covers GATE's own rules.
Frequently asked questions
